Superb coffee shops. Go on a day trip by train to Castlemaine. Circular tram journey round city is good fun (and free); Victoria Market; explore the little alley ways and Victorian shopping arcades in the city centre; if street graffiti is your thing go to Hosier Lane, then cross road to Federation Square. Lygon Street is great for food (especially Italian). Cake shops in St Kilda. Obviously the MCG will be busy on Saturday/Sunday due to the footy, but if you get a chance to do a tour of the MCG definitely do it.

you're going to the second best city in the universe - enjoy you lucky sods.

Phillip Island is pretty cool and drive along the great ocean Road there are some amazing houses on stilts (not too far along)... Lorne was a small quirky town with a great beach (picture below added) and cool bars, cafes etc....

Philip Island was great. Visit the fairy penguins at dusk. It was 25 years ago when I was there but I suspect that it hasn't changed much.

Nah, I went about seven years ago, as you say you sit on benches and they all turn up around dusk hundreds of the little bleeders..... cute, but I was beginning to wonder when they would show up, as I had a schedule to keep...

Short train trip to Brighton in the suburbs. Not much there but at least you get to see a Brighton beach without pebbles!

There is a bar on the 57th floor of the Rialto Tower that offers THE BEST views across Melbourne possible. A bit poncy, a bit expensive, you have dress quite smartly to be allowed to even arrive at the lift door (concierge makes judgement on ground floor) where you will be met by a waiter and shown to your table, but you cannot get a better view of the whole of Melbourne.

Melbourne Supper Club on Spring Street, unsigned wooden door, go up to second floor. Sommelier there is George, who is a lifelong BHAFC fan, and until last season a season ticket holder, and also my son! Ask for him, he'll look after you!

Young and Jackson! Bit like a rough welcoming just outside the station boozer in the UK, but bigger! But go upstairs for a rooftop beer and it makes so much more sense. Cannot wait to get back there.....

By the seaside in West Somerset
A few years since I was there but...........
St Kilda for the evening vintage tram ride with dinner (delicious kangaroo meat).
Philip Island if you can get down there for the penguin parade but wrap up warm!
Great Ocean Road from Geelong down past Lawn.
Stroll along the riverfront down by the casino - good coffee, bars, street sellers and entertainers day or night. There's also a decent river cruise.
Oh! And Brighton Beach for a bit of springtime sun and seagulls :lolol:

Melbourne really is Brighton-down-Under! Think there is a Seagulls-down-Under meet there this weekend too.

Was there in February, still good. There was one big down side. Hundreds of Chinese tourists who having been told NOT to use any cameras with flash instantly started to do exactly that when penguins were crossing the beach. Poor little b*****s were getting traumatised.

As well as the free circular tram ride the open top tour buses are a good way to get your bearings and choose what you want to see in more detail. Great city.
