What the feck?

Defending well, looking good for a point then just hand the initiative to Sunderland.

Don't even start me on the QPR game!!!

p.s. Please prove me wrong, but I think that was a crap decision!

At the time, I was thinking it was positive and brave, letting us attack. But hmm...

I was the same as East London. We had held them, and we should go for the three points. Unlucky?

He was going for the win. Shows how far we have come under McGhee.

The difference between a draw and a win is greater than that between a draw and a defeat, so we may as well go for it. Good for him.

To be fair to the bloke, he's been criticised in the past for being too negative with substitutions if he's made changes at all during a game.

Didn't go today so can't really comment, but from what I heard on ther radio it sounded like he was being a bit brave and maybe it did cost us a point, but I think it's good that we feel confident to 'go for it' at times.

McGhee did the right thing, we were under a lot of pressure so he took off a defender and brought on Jarrett, who did cause Sunderland problems. This was an attempt to give us more possession.

The goals were a bit unfortunate, FDM parried a shot for the first goal and it ended up at Arca's feet about four yards out, and the second, whilst certainly a penalty, was due to an unlucky ricochet off Harding that went straight back to their NUmber 7, who was then tripped by Harding.

Fantastic stadium, fans were pretty friendly, and although they were better than us FDM had few saves to make. The ref was a homer too, which did not help things.

In fairness to McGee, in his interview he admitted he took a gamble to go for the win and it backfired. A pity as it sounded as though we were worth a point today.

unfortunately the only attacking thing I remember Jarrett doing yesterday was beating the full back and crossing into Row Z!

Credit to Mc Ghee for going for a win but why/how did he think Jarrett would make the difference - no-one to cross to, etc, etc.

Also recall both goals coming from the left (Jarrett, Harding) side.

Somehow the money must be found for another big/decent forward.

Have to say I COMPLETELY disagree with the sentiments on this thread. I honestly thought El-Abd must have picked up a knock for McGhee to have taken him off. With 5-4-1 we were just about containing them and having the odd foray forward, but once El-Abd went off and we went 4-4-2 with Jarrett, that opened the whole match up. Suddenly we found ourselves under severe pressure.

Coming away with a point from that fixture would have been a tremendous result and a real bonus. Going for all 3 with half an hour to go was a bit overly gung-ho. I'd have expected a change like that AFTER we'd gone a goal down perhaps, but not when we were half an hour from a very useful point.

Whether we'd have held on for that point had MM not made the changes is all conjecture of course. But I can't help feeling we ended up throwing it away and playing into Sunderlands hands just as they were getting more and more frustrated.

Hindsights a wonderful thing of course, but I bet MM is kicking himself over that change...in hindsight, I doubt very much whether he'd do the same again.

What a brilliant post!
I don't want to moan but MM blew it yesterday. Perhaps we'd have lost anyway but what was the point of being so tight and disciplined for an hour and then to weaken the team.

What I said on another thread before the match we should have played 4-4-2 and played for nil or three points from the start.

I don't think MM was being particularly courageous in this instance.

I thought is might have been a pre-arranged plan, but apparently the substitition caused the muddle that led to their first goal.

On a bigger question, do we have scouts looking a the opposition? Sometimes (over the last six or more seasons) I feel that we do not do enough homework on the opposition and sometimes we get caught out (or outwitted)?

McGhee's substitution of El Abd on Saturday was poor

(1) Any balls played up front were not sticking. Currie's free role was a disaster (Currie creates chances from wide and deep not 3/4 of the way up the pitch) and we desperately missed Adam Virgo's work rate. If a change were to be made it was crying out for Hart to at least pressurize their defence. Jarrett was the wrong call, especially as we seemingly left Currie playing in a position unbeknown to man which leads me to my next point;

(2) When Jarrett came on the players were clueless about where they were playing, the bench were shouting and the players look lost. Not long after Sunderland scored. Coincidence?

(3) I though Jarrett was woeful when he came on. Three times he ran at their defence and he lost the ball twice (once when he was in front of their defenders, with his pace he shouldn't be caught) and the other he crossed into the stand. He needs work on the training ground to improve.

(4) Why do the same players get subbed? Its always El Abd (despite playing well enough Saturday), Hammond or Knight unless someone is injured. Chippe and Oatway were not long back from injury - Why not them?

Unless we win there is room for criticism, at QPR i was well happy when we 2-1 up thinking and obviously b4 QPR went on a bender up the table it would be a good win on a team we should pick up points, it went to 2-2 i was annoyed but a point is better then none then we lost it. We were holding sunderland and they're a good team, MM tried to go for it and it didn't work out but if it stayed 0-0 which we all now wish it did we'd be moaning about not winning. Look forward to Derby and hopefully three points

Fair play to McGhee for going for it. I thought they were poor for the first hour as they had no punch in attack. Bridges seemed to lift them and got them three points.

I thought El-Abd had Arca in his pocket until substituted so was a bit surprised that he went off rather than Harding who was poor again.

Having seen the goals on the telly, Arca is offside when Bridges heads against the bar but they never give them so they!!??

I submitted my vote for Sunderland man of the match on their text vote - the ref. He was more biased than Mr Olivera who gave us a pen at the Pikies! How on earth we didn't get a pen for the challenge on Harty I'll never know.

Still, a good day out, great stadium and reasonably cheap beer for a footy ground.

Not bouncing this; just had time to calm down & think.

I think MM has his heart in the club, but tactically?
The frustration of seeing that his substitutions just make no sense does my head in!

I'd be intersested to hear what Bob Brooker thought of the decisions. If it was me I'd be saying, "Are you sure?"

I know I'm just a mere supporter, but every point is vital to stay in this league & we can't afford to just surrender to teams by making substitutions that make life easier for them.

(By the way, I'm in know way saying MM should go!)
