View GalleryGary McAllister looks set to be unveiled as the next Leeds United manager, sources close to the club have told Yorkshire Evening Post understands.
It comes as Dave Bassett and John Gannon were today relieved of their duties as they prepared the United team for tonight's match at Southend.

United chief scout Gwyn Williams broke the news to the pair at Tottenhma Hotspur's training ground where the squad are preparing for tonight's game.

Bookmaker Paddy Power today suspended betting on the Leeds United job after receiving a rush of money for McAllister.

A spokesman said a number of the bets had come from punters who were normally 'in the know' on football matters.

William Hill still has McAllister as 25 to one on for the hot seat at Elland Road.

More follows.

Shame Bassett has gone, he could have continued to be a spanner in the works.... I read that Leeds fans were gutted when harry joined and blamed him for the recent run of bad results...

A likeable guy, so has gone down in my estimation upon joining Dirty Leeds. Although I fear he'll do a decent job, which is a shame because we've got Leeds in our sights.

Leeds United have named Gary McAllister as their new manager on an initial contract until the end of the season.

The 43-year-old has agreed a short-term deal after a day of talks with United, and he is set to meet with the club's squad for the first time tomorrow.

Leeds moved to appoint their former midfielder after allowing previous boss Dennis Wise to join Newcastle United as the club's executive director (football). Wise's confirmed his departure from Elland Road earlier today, and United also announced the departures of his assistant Dave Bassett and first-team coach John Gannon ahead of tonight's clash with Southend United at Roots Hall.

Leeds' technical director Gwyn Williams has been handed control of the first team this evening, but McAllister is poised to take charge for the first time against Tranmere Rovers at Elland Road on Saturday.

The ex-Scotland international is returning to the club where he made almost 300 appearances during six years as a player at Elland Road, and he helped Leeds to the 1992 Division One title under the management of Howard Wilkinson.

He also played for Liverpool, Leicester City and Coventry City before becoming the Sky Blues boss in 2002, his only previous managerial position. He was forced to leave Highfield Road in 2004 for personal reasons as his late wife battled cancer.
