the British tradition they expected their word to be their bond.

But none of the voters were British. So why expect them to behave in a 'British way?' And let's not loose sight of the fact we only got one other vote. Yes, only one. And the team were so bloody clueless they did not even know who this was from until a long time after the announcement.

The bottom line is the English bid did not win the votes, it makes no odds whether someone changed their mind or not. We all have set backs in our lives, the key is to dust yourself down, and return better and above all learn from it. Not blame everyone and everything except yourself, which IS a British tradition.

Are you suggesting that the bid team did not know the rules? Anyone would be pretty stupid to tender for something and not have an idea of how the system works.

Subtext - I'm talking the REAL unofficial rules. It would seem we tried to play along, more-or-less with the offical rules (small indidents like bribeing the delegates wives with expensive handbags aside), but were never in the game.

how many "real" Russian peasants can afford to go to football? their bid film showed (Mongolian) herdsmen playing football I wonder if they will be saving their roubles to go?

Were they playing their traditional version of using a severed human head instead of a football ? ???

The bid team knew the unofficial rules hence the handbags, hence the England friendlies against T&T and Thailand, hence the visits to T&T, hence the Beckham coaching schools he set up etc etc. At the end of the day for whatever reason they did not pitch it correctly. I have said all along the the bid team do/did not know how to play the international football politics game. Unlike other nations and regions, we do not have any natural allies on the international football scene. If anything we come across as arrogant and aloof. These are the reasons we lost, in my opinion.

Was it bolloxs, the Russians won the bid because when it comes to given out back handers they are the world champions that's how things get done in Russia always have done and always will, f*** all to do with being aloof or arrogant, if that's the case how come we got the Olympic Games.

So are you suggesting British media should not expose corruption within FIFA,& if the English FA should bid for a future World Cup we should be prepared to offer larger backhanders than are opponets.? nice

The Olympic and World Cup tenders were by different teams.

Could we not follow Man Us example in the FA Cup and withdraw; since that day the FA Cup has been on a steady decline. Would the same not happen with the World Cup if we refused to take part.

Didn't we do that when the World Cup 1st started? We left FIFA after WW1. Then first time we deigned to enter the World Cup in 1950, got beat 1-0 by the USA !!

No, the BBC were right to do what they did.

And there is no evidence that Russia bunged FIFA. But, horse-trading and palm greasing goes on. In fact the limits of this are enshrined in the bid rules. The bid team should have known what they were getting involved in....I just think it's a bit rich, not to mention late, to complain about it now.

All very well Boris doing this, but why were they staying there free in the first place?

At last ! The question that nobody dared ask. This was England trying to curry favour with FIFA,trying to buy votes with a free bed at the Travelodge with a stale baguette and cold coffee left outside the door in the morning. And free entry to the Equestrian events as a bonus.

the answer is simple, set up the World Champions League.

Money raised gets split evenly between the entrants, which would entice the top nations away from Fifa

Only the top teams invited so no more trips to likes of San Marino or Latvia.

Played during the course of the season so there are no more meaningless friendlies

Final in the summer so the players get adequate rest before the new season begins.

I would imagine The IOC and other bodies stay for free during the Games, Sadly FIFA still run the Olympic football - could we refuse to host the football?

Just wait ... within two years FIFA will be challenged by the big European countries once they also get the South Americans onside and Football splits like Boxing, F1 and everything else ... the new World Football Alliance will hold their own World Cup and move away from the circus that exists for Blatter's personal gratification.

You heard it here first .... WFA

Shirley you are not suggesting that no change is required. The system needs changing. It lends itself to corruption - and we have seen it clearly in the last week. What weakens our position is that we participated in the grubby charade - so a demand to change the system looks like sour grapes. But a complete overhaul is needed.
