What was that all about? Why was it a non contested drop ball? The ball went flat, surely that’s a proper drop ball so Maupay was right?

New law this year you are not supposed to contest the drop ball. The referee decides which team will get it. He told Maupay not to contest it.

The ref doesn't decide which team will get it, as is referenced in the thread linked above, the ball will go to dropped to a player from the team who last touched the ball in the same place it was last touched.

Thats a bit pedantic obviously i meant the ref decides who last played the ball :ffsparr: also remeber the ref will often chose when to blow to stop play also knowing who had possession at that time.

He didn't really contest it as he was some distance away when the ref dropped the ball, just not the required distance. The Chelsea player was more at fault as he didn't react at all to the ball being dropped. If Maupay was just a yard further away then he would have fully entitled to run at the ball as it was "in play" once it hit the ground.

Refs are refs all the ones I have ever had any dealings with are all unbelievably insecure.

Do you ever watch any refs porn btw???

If play is stopped, the ball will be dropped to a player on the team that last touched the ball - and where they touched it. All other players must be 4.5 yards (4m) away. ... However, any play stopped in a penalty area will be returned to the goalkeeper, even if the attacking team had the ball.

Loved that Maupay had the attitude to just take it. Some might see it as poor form but every team needs a bit of an edge, and I love Maupay's borderline sociopathic pursuit of goals.

Rapidly becoming my favourite player because of this.
