Bit like the goalie equivalent of Mike Dean for me. He did a lot of very, very good things and his average was high. But when he got it wrong, boy did he get it wrong. I remember thinking how Grobbelaar like he seemed in that game. Took no pleasure in seeing that last night but like most Albion fans, just gave a knowing nod and thought "He always had that in his locker".
I prefer to do exactly the same regarding the 2 reflex saves in injury time, which could have forced extra time had the last kick been 2 inches to the right.

Yes he could make the odd error, but a fine keeper and his enthusiasm was there for all to see. But, and its a big one, he was too short at this level.

A lot of revisionist nonsense on here.

Maty made far fewer errors than Sanchez has.
In fact that was really the main thing in his favour.
Sanchez has him beaten hands down in every other department.

His biggest problem was always that he conceded more than he should and he was heavily dependent on the centrebacks.

As Stat has said above, without him, we wouldn't have got to where we are now.
He was comfortably good enough for a perma-relegation threatened side, but not good enough to push on from there.

Funny how easily we all, very much myself included, forget about all the first class saves (Stockdale wouldn't have made) he also made in that game.
Very debatable….. I’m sure Stocko saved a number that Ryan wouldn’t have got close to, but then Ryan would probably have saved the Grealish shot at Villa Park that Stockdale made a mess of….

Both had errors in them, and had Stockdale stayed, he’d been told he would be starting, but we were only prepared to offer 12 months.

On the subject of goalkeepers, Martinez (whom I now detest) was far less of a time wasting thunderc*(t against the Aussies - If this is the direct result of hours being added to the 90 mins, then bring it on. Much as I love Ali Mac I want Martinez to suffer after his last visit to the Amex. What a bell end

Spot on.

I went to Gillingham yesterday (something to do), and the Salford goalie adopted a similar approach even at 3-0 up, literally diving on back passes - I mean WTF!

The sooner ball in play timekeeping is implemented the better for me.

Yep, 30 minutes each way with the ball actually in play. Matches would take about the same time as they do now.
Was watching the American version of football when in the States a few weeks ago.; The ball is hardly EVER in play there.

Just stoppage after stoppage for tv advertising.

Being generous, he was in a difficult position with two Argentines bearing down on him . Should have belted it though.
This is the truth. Don't care if you're an EPL manager or a national team manager, it's still pretty f*cking dumb to try and insist on your keeper and defenders stroking the ball to each other across the 18 yard line when every bit of their instinct is screaming for them to clear their lines. They'll be professional and follow the manager's orders for sure, tho very few seem comfortable doing it. As a tactic it's almost as dumb as the two-man corner whereby you voluntarily reduce your team to ten men at a set play :dunce:

Yes, to be fair, it was a bit of a hospital pass really - it put him in a very tight situation. Agree that he should have wellied it, regardless of any instructions from the manager.

It is very easy to criticise Ryan for that goal but he also made some cracking saves as well. Such is the lot of the goalie that it’s only the mistakes and goals that are remembered. He has got a decent career under his belt, played for his boyhood club in Arsenal and earns shedloads of money. Oh and he’s played at the World Cup. No need to feel sorry for him and I don’t. I’d rather remember the good saves he made and the enthusiasm he showed when he played for us.
The issue with Ryan is his lack of consistency, I never felt comfortable whenever the opposition put him under pressure. But yes he has had a bloody good career, made some great saves and helped get us to where we are. All I said when he stuffed it up was, "and that is why we got rid of him".

The diving on the ball thin is hugely fcuking annoying - but ‘in play timekeeping’ isn’t going to help stop that kind of time wasting, is it? The ball IS in play.

Good point, but depends if the seven second rule is strict applied (if it even still exists), bit like foul throws - (though Salford did get called for one of those).

So the ref was giving a load of indirect freekicks in the box?

If that happens, we'll have the game stopped for adverts while the ball's out for a throw-in.

The game really isn't that broken. Have refs add plenty of time for time wasting, and don't **** up the world's greatest sport

I agree, refs need to stamp down on time wasting with cards and additional time. Most of the time wasting is very obvious and is generally a team trying to break up play to hang on to a point or a lead

I don't actually think his problem was consistency... In his first couple of seasons he was actually very consistent, his form just completely abandoned him all in one big chunk when Potter came in. The change from having Dunk and Duffy heading everything away to the insistence on playing everything along the floor seemed to absolutely disintegrate his ability to save shots.

I may be finding something that isn't there on this next point, but I also think that Potter's may of playing meant that when the defenders made errors the opposition were invariably 1-on-1 with Ryan, which in turn has a far lower expected save ratio than say a shot from a headed corner. We were a lot deeper under Hughton and Ryan was more of an extra defender, rather than a key part in breaking the press like Sanchez is now.

His specialism was reaction saves based on his agility, rather than his command of the box and distribution. Sanchez is definitely an upgrade, but I wouldn't say he's more consistent. Sanchez is a fantastic keeper but some of his errors are laughable and seem to happen 1 every 3 or 4 games, it's just they result in goals less of the time

Absolutely spot on. He was such an upgrade on Stockdale at the time and was a big reason we survived those first couple of seasons.

Wasn't Maty in the running for player of the season, for every full season he played for us?
