The way we have treated Ryan is nothing short of a disgrace.

This is not where our problems lie. If our bloody forwards had taken the missed chances they’ve had he would still be between the sticks.

Classless from us not even naming him on the bench.

If we sign a keeper in the January window I will be livid. This is NOT where our problems lie.

Ryan has been treated decisively and fairly. Potter explained the position and has told him clearly that he wants to give Sanchez an extended run. He has explained that he understands Ryan will want games and is free to find another club in January. He has confirmed that Steele is preferred in the support role of number 2 keeper. Sanchez already has better stats than Ryan which justifies the decision as best for the club. Ryan says that all the time he is at Brighton he will fight to regain his place. As a Brighton fan rather than just a Ryan fan, this seems no different to dropping any other player who is off his game. The second keeper slot is already filled, so Maty moves down to number 3.

So you know the way we've treated him then? Nope thought not.

You don't have a diddly about what happens behind the scenes.

Agree that MR needed to have a rest and think Sanchez has done very well and deserves his run. You do realise that the keeper on the bench may well have to come on and play? The keeper on the bench should be the 2nd choice keeper in the club. This isn’t even MR’s decision to say no, he is a professional (and for what it’s worth he doesn’t seem that kind of bloke that wouldn’t want to be on the bench in this scenario). Unfortunately it is yet another example of Potter’s ineptness to have your 3rd choice keeper (or probably 4th to be fair) sitting on the bench in the Premier League.

Again, you have literally no idea what’s going in behind the scenes.

It's true that we have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, but I don't understand why there isn't room for 2 good keepers at the club: one on the bench (eg Ryan) keeps the pressure on the then number one (now Sanchez). Rotate when it feels best. Chelsea are doing it, so why not Brighton. I really don't get it. Something odd behind the scenes for me.

The keeper on the bench almost never has to come on and play, so his role is not necessarily filled by the second best keeper. It's filled by the best person to be on the bench, which these days is also a specialist role and Potter's decision to make. I have no idea why you think that's inept. We have four keepers. One has been injured all season. One is the benchwarmer. That leaves two keepers vyeing for the first team slot.

Name me one other club that doesn’t have their No1 & No2 in the match day squad when fit? The sub keeper is not a specialist position, it’s a goalkeeper who isn’t on the team! Why would you not put your 2 nd best keeper on the bench?

You're debating it with me, but I'm only paraphrasing Potter. As others have said, we don't know what really goes on.

Who is the no 2 ? Not your call. Maybe it’s not Maty now. Also :

-Not mentally in the right place
-Not now deemed no 2 by the coach that sees him in training every day
-Wants away
Etc

I can answer you that.
Potter likes the way Steele goes about the deputy role. That’s why Steele is on the bench. He told Ryan this, who told the media.

But the deputy may actually have to play? What does he like about Steele on the bench? How he warms up the No1? Totally bizarre thinking. Have your best players in the match day squad!

It is a bit odd, but who knows how the dynamics of a football squad works? Not a biggie imho, and Potter has made many more decisions more questionable than that

He may be dropped from the bench now after whatever that just was . Ffs

bit harsh - that was his FIRST GAME since September. Remember he doesnt play in the U23s and we have no reserves these days so it was literally his first taste of first team football in 12 weeks.

Yes it is. GKs are rarely substituted except for injury or red cards. So one of the mist likely times a sub keeper is called upon is when the GK has been sent off and conceded a pen. So a sub keeper who's a bit of a pen specialist is sometimes quite useful, and it looks as if Potter might have got a point, eh?

So, you put your 3rd choice (or maybe 4th) keeper on the bench for the Premier League, on the off chance that he has to come on and he will have to face a penalty? You leave your second choice keeper, who is a better all round keeper in the stands because he has a worse penalty record (not worrying about the rest of the game that the sub keeper will need to play). What a load of tosh! Name me another club in the league that drops their Number 1 and he doesn’t go on the bench?
Keeper bringing someone down in the box used to be a penalty and sending off, now it tends to be a yellow card if he was deemed to be going for the ball, so there is even less chance the ongoing keeper will come on and face a penalty!
