Mature Bush

Feeling a bit delicate today, but i've agreed to do some gardening. My main task is to move a mature bush.
This sounds like hard work to me and i don't know if i'm up for it.... Has anyone got any tips on "mature bush movement"

funny you should say this, i was at work yesterday and a women at the next set of desks to mine was on the phone to a landscape gardening company.

However i spat my tea out when she said "i have this huge unruly bush that is urgent need of trim up"....

She said it seriously and only after mentioning it to her after her call, she realised what she had said.... LMFAO

Too early in the year to move things. October is much better - plenty of warmth left in the soil and enough rain to keep it watered. If you must move it now then prune it hard to remove excess folliage, and give it a good watering several hours before you dig it up.

You're right i might get the lad next door to do it for £20. I'll sit and watch with a hair of the dog.

Wait until nov, dec, jan, feb, mar.....when the plant's completely dormant. Do it when there's no frost around and make sure you get a decent rootball on the plant. Water well next spring/summer when things start growing.

While we're on gardening how do you get rid of bloody brambles?

very strong roundup mix (50/50 roundup/water) Spray it over the leaves then a week later, clear it all away....the roots would've been killed by then.

Yeah 100% mate. I use it it in a public park with no bad effects at all....it's one of the safest chemicals you can get.

Talking of watering well, I've been drafted in to do the Saturdays (the actual days and not the band, sadly). I rocked up an hour early and bowling green number one was flooded! Very popular with the birds and the dogs.

If it's the Titus variety then it's very hard to get rid of as any Sunderland fan will tell you.

Do you know whether Roundup is strong enough nowadays to kill Bamboo if you could inject into the roots

Roundup (glyphosate is the active chemical) has to be sprayed on to a plants leaves preferably on a warm day, I'd say around 17/18 degress for maximum effect. For bamboo use a fine spray as you will find the droplets just want to run off the leaves. A useful trick is to add an adjuvant (in this case something to get the roundup to stick to the leaves), washing up liquid is the easiest available.
Bamboo can be difficult to get rid of but remember the roots although tough generally only exist in the top 12 inches of soil so digging out is an option armed with a mattock and an axe after reducing the plants height to a couple of feet. Good luck!
