Oh well. I'm guessing the lure of staying near his family oop north swung it. Or perhaps Gus didn't fancy him enough to push the boat out and get him.

great chance for Grant Hall imho, Painter is simply not up to it and we need a replacement.

I know he played left back in that one game but isn't he more of a centre back? That and the fact he is yet to sign his new contract.

We have let a good player slip through our fingers here. If this is a case of Poyet thinking he can do better, we'll now see who materialises, but I'm not holding my breath.

we aint doomed..... but that was Wednesdays third signing, inc Chris Kirkland.

what do we have. f*ck all but rumours of a keeper being bunked into a Fatboy slim gig.

At least we are in with a chance of still signing Deon Burton and Gregory Bobkin

Why are we always so slow off the mark when it comes to new signings and so slow to release players who are not up to Championship standard? It's bloody annoying.

Feeling a bit despondent as players we've been linked with, are now seemingly going or rumoured to be going elsewhere. We really need 7 or 8 in, and whilst others are building squads, we're going nowhere.

I totally agree, it always seems from the outside, that we are slow and often miss targets. But thats nothing do with Poyet now even though his comments of "we're monitoring the situation" in relation to Mattock seem to suggest he wasn't massively arsed in singing him. I really hope they have back plans or that TB hasn't put transfers on hold pending the Gus rumours being resolved once Swansea appoint someone.

we are desperately short of championship quality in some areas, left back and keeper are 2 of those.

A LB who did well for us, seemed keen on us and was on a free transfer. :wtf:

I wonder if family ties and desire to stay in the Midlands have anything to do with it. We all know what happened with Hoskins. Also, I wonder if, as much as we think Brighton is a wonderful place to live and work, do others? If you had the journey I've had today (coming back from Wales - jam at Ross-on-Wye, most direct route from Gloucester to Swindon blocked, so had to go to M5, then on top an accident on the M25 between the M23 and Godstone, causing tailbacks to the M4 - we reached the M25 about 3.30, but didn't get home till after 7), and you didn't want to move to Brighton, you would probably think twice about coming here. And housing costs must be a factor too. Yes, I love our county and my home city and have no desire to live in the Midlands or Sheffield, but we forget potential signings have none of these links. Wages almost certainly played a part, but I suspect the things I mentioned were just as important. Saying that, I wish our club would get a move on. There was a reason for having to hold on till the end under Knight. That reason is no longer valid.

As much as I want to believe Gus has another flair player lined up, I do think we will struggle to find a better left back than Mattock - for what we can offer than is. I really was very impressed with him.

agreed, great attacking full back, 10x better than Painter, only 22, from the premier league and on a f*cking free

Whatever we offered Mattock, if anything, it would appear that in the round he preferred to move to Sheff Weds. Not an terribly inspiring start to the season. Next up it wouldn't surprise me if Grant Hall joined Spurs (wtf didn't we offer him a new contract earlier?) and Lewis Dunk moves to another club in the Premiership with Liam Bridcutt. We'll then be well and truly in the poo but at least Dicker, Harley and Painter will still be with us. Happy days.
