Albion are aiming for three established goalkeepers in the Premier League.
One of them will definitely be Niki Maenpaa, another could well be Australian international Maty Ryan.
While Finnish shot-stopper Maenpaa is said by a well-placed source to be very close to staying for a third season, the Seagulls are stepping up their pursuit of Valencia's Ryan.
Club officials are believed to have flown to Valencia yesterday to cement their interest in the 25-year-old.
Albion are not waiting on a resolution to the contract stand-off involving current No.1 David Stockdale to get their plans into place.
Stockdale has turned down the club's offer of a new deal. If he leaves then Albion will bring in another senior keeper.
Either way, 21-year-old Christian Walton will be sent out on loan again to further his development.
Born in Plumpton in New South Wales rather than East Sussex, he played in Australia for Blacktown City and Central Coast Mariners before joining Club Brugge in Belgium in 2013.
Ryan was still a teenager when Valencia awarded him a six-year contract in the summer of 2015.
He made 20 appearances in La Liga, the Copa Del Rey (Spanish Cup) and Europa League in his debut campaign at the Mestalla, playing regularly under Gary Neville (below) during the ex-England and Manchester United defender's ill-fated four-month reign.
The Argus: Neville kept faith after Ryan conceded seven goals against Barcelona at the Nou Camp. He retained his place against Real Betis four days later and finished the season conceding goals by Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney playing for his country in a 2-1 friendly defeat against England at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
Neville had gone by then and Ryan's first team opportunities dried up as he dropped behind Diego Alves and Jaume Domenech in the pecking order.
He played only twice for Valencia at the start of last season before returning to Belgium in January on loan to Racing Genk.
Regular game time with Genk in the Belgian First Division and Europa League, including a run of five domestic clean sheets in succession, has revitalised the 6ft Ryan's reputation as an agile, confident and communicative keeper with accurate distribution.
Former Middlesbrough striker Mikkel Beck, now Ryan's representative, told Australian channel SBS last month: "With Maty doing so well for Genk, there are clubs starting to show interest.
"He was a bit rusty at first because he hadn't played much in half a year but now he's just getting better with each game and is back to top form.
"He's a top goalkeeper and when everybody sees him doing it week by week, they are going to come calling.
"What Maty wants is to be somewhere where he is playing, and his ambition and plan is to make that happen in Spain with Valencia. The Spanish league is the best in the world, and it's where he wants to test himself.

If you get Maty Ryan be excited...be very, very excited. I've watched him since his debut for Central Coast Mariners in the A-League and very quickly tipped him to play for Australia (Mark Schwarzer was our number one at the time). He left the Mariners for Club Brugge and was Keeper of the Year in Belgium two years running. He then went to Valencia and was number one for a while but got a bad injury and then couldn't force his way back in (under a new manager). So, off to Genk, where he recovered his form.
He replaced Mark Schwarzer in the NT for the World Cup in Brazil and has mainly been number one ever since, however he will face strong competition from Mitch Langerak for Thursday night's WCQ against Saudi. He will certainly get game time at the Confederations Cup shortly so you can get a preview there (and realistically, the Oz keeper will have a lot of work in games against Germany, Chile and Cameroon).
Ryan is only 6 foot but more than makes up for it with exceptional positioning and super agility. He's a fabulous shot stopper and dominates his box very well - in fact if he has a weakness he can sometimes be too adventurous off his line. Often comes waaaay out of his area to snuff out attacks and 19 times out of 20 will be successful. Those other ones out of 20 will be teeth grittingly memorable.
He probably has confidence to fly out of the box because he has (by keeper standards) outstanding football technique. Great football brain - really good distribution. This guy will be adored by the crowd if he is your number one and stays injury free.

The Brugges fans were devastated when Ryan left for Valencia. I couldn't be bothered hunting it down but there's a great picture somewhere of a giant tifo of Ryan at Brugges.

I've heard you guys are also in for Aaron Mooy. He's definitely one of our best at the moment - first time there's been a public bidding war for an Australian since Harry Kewell. Others you might care to look at are Jackson Irvine (Burton Albion) and best of all Tom Rogic (Celtic). My Celtic friends will hate me for saying that but I'd love to see Rogic in the EPL:

It’s been slim pickings for Australians playing in the English Premier League in recent seasons, but the tide could be starting to turn again with the revelation Mat Ryan is on the verge of signing with Brighton and Hove Albion.
England’s Daily Mirror is reporting the Socceroos goalkeeper has agreed to join the newly promoted club next season in what would be a tremendous boost to his career.
Ryan, who is expected to start for Australia in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia at Adelaide Oval tonight, has been in the frame for a move for the past three weeks after an impressive second half of the season with Belgian club Genk.
The 25-year-old started the season playing with Valencia in Spain’s La Liga before injuries saw him lose his No 1 spot and resulted in him being loaned out to Genk, where he quickly established himself as the first-choice keeper.
While it is believed there were other options open to the former Central Coast Mariners star, playing in the top tier in England was always going to be the most attractive option.
Ryan’s impending signing will be a huge boost for Australian soccer given the popularity of the Premier League here.
Australians have figured prominently in the EPL over the years and, during the height of Australian soccer’s Golden Generation, we had well in excess of a dozen players involved, including the likes of Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, Mark Schwarzer and Paul Okon.
However, the numbers have decreased dramatically over the past five or six years to the extent that there are just a handful of players at EPL clubs now.
Brad Smith and Adam Federici are both at Bournemouth, but have seen little playing time while Aiden O’Neill has emerged as a star of the future after making his debut for Burnley as a substitute against Liverpool before starting in a League Cup game.
Aaron Mooy, who is on the books of Manchester City, was on loan with Huddersfield Town and helped them win promotion to the EPL.
He is expected to play in the Premier League, whether it is with Huddersfield or with one of the three or four clubs that are interested in signing him.
Ryan will become Brighton’s third summer signing after manager Chris Houghton tied up deals for Germany’s Pascal Gross and Celtic defender Josh Kerr.
