That is immaterial if he was exceptional he would be recognised and be playing against better players but you can only play your best at a certain level whether that be Sunday league Prem or Div 1 and occasianlly you will still get beat by players but hopefully you will restrict the danger that the winger can cause, as happens with Matt Richards on most occassions.

To be honest I'd rather a strong left back that was good in the tackle, hard to beat but very little attacking threat.
However we have the opposite and he is a decent left back so worth buying if he is on the cheap.

tommy elphick is exceptional in defence. he is constantly recognised for that and he is here.

yes you can only play your best at a certain level, and richards if often shown up in league one so i don't understand your point.

i like richards, don't get me wrong, but he does often get beaten.

And Elphick doesnt neither do Whing or Hawkins or the so called genius Lynch?

I like Elphick but he has been looked at by scouts from Championship clubs and their opinion, not that it is faultless, is that they are not sure that he is good enough yet for the Championship.

lynch is neither here nor there. he'll never play for us again.

and i hope you're not seriously trying to compare elphick's tackling ability with richards'. then again, you did use ashley cole earlier. and lampard against savage..

that is the level lower grade players have to aspire to and to achieve the same status in the game

You are saying about Richards getting beat by a winger and insuating that Elphick never gets beat which is totally wrong, he does on many occassions but being in the middle it isnt so obvious as being out on the wing.

It took three years of playing Kerry when he'd turned into a liabilty to replace him with Richards, do you really think we should even be considering not going out of our way to sign him permanently?

I like Richards I desperately hope we sign him permanently. BUT, he does get beaten down his outside fairly regularly. Either he gets too tight and the winger pokes it past him and beats him for pace, or he hangs a leg out inviting the winger to take it past him and this has resulted on numerous occasions in dangerous balls being played across our six yard box which FDM has prevented from going in. If he can become a little bit more solid defensively, we have a quality player on our hands, at the moment he is good but a slight, very slight, liability. Sounds like he has improved a lot recently though, which is very good news!

I can't believe that anyone is doubting that we might want to sign him on a full time contract.

The stats show that when he has been injured we have not performed as well. He is not the best left back in the division defensively but he is better than anyone else at the club in that position and who is to say we could attract a better player then Richards.

He seems to enjoy playing for us, reports are he would like to sign, and he gives us extra options going forward. I would snap him up. If we don't sign him and he goes to another club then it would be interesting to see how we get on.
