in the wells family ray was considered the best cricketer not alan or colin, mind you he was the eldest

Hardly. Ray was an average club cricketer in the Brighton league! I can remember him, as Newhaven skipper, getting WELL shitty when I clean bowled him as a sixteen year old, at Fort Road.

On my way back from Lords. He was great today. If he hadn't ripped Amla that would probably have been a winning innings!

Sod writing that in the scorebook!! Especially if he had a good day in the field with catches and alike.

Snow is without doubt the finest fast bowler I have ever seen in action.
I used to go to Hove as a boy just to watch him.

Saw Dexter towards the end of his career mostly in Sunday League - bloody awesome driver.

Ted Dexter was the finest Sussex batsman I ever watched, wasn't keen on signing autographs though, most of the swear words I know I learnt as a result of asking Ted to sign my book!!

It's always difficult to compare players of a different era and a different type. How is it possible to compare Tate with Prior?

One thing I would say is that Prior is rapidly becoming a candidate for a member of an all-time England XI. Alec Stewart was probably the better batsman - but not when keeping wicket - Evans, Knott, Taylor and Russell were better wicket keepers but were worse batsman. I'd say Knott would swing it for me - fine keeper and not a bad bat - but Prior's getting close.

The only other candidate for an all-time England XI is Ranji, whose record is astonishing. Tate, Greig, Dexter, Shepherd and Snow were fine players but they're not going to the best ever in the respective disciplines. Prior may just be on his way though.

I agree. They showed stats on Sky the other day and Prior has a long way to go before he matches Knott's record with the gloves. I feel that Knott was consistently an excellent wicket keeper over many years whilst Prior has got there now after a patchy start. Prior very much looks the better batsman but perhaps Knott batted in an era with more threatening bowling attacks and less protection.

I eventually got his autograph after months of trying. I had to carry his kit up to the dressing room to get it though.

Prior deserves great credit for knuckling down about 3-4 years ago and really taking his 'keeping to a new level. He used to have regular howlers behind the stumps and maybe too many batting cameos rather than big innings for Sussex so wasn't quite the full deal for England either. He must have been close to losing his place to rivals like Ambrose and Foster but grafted, kept his place on merit and apart from the Amla miss he has been spot on this summer. Plus his batting has got England out of a few holes over the years. Maybe we have got a bit too dependent on him when the frontline batters dont do the business. He is a genuine all rounder and probably the best in world cricket since Gilchrist.

I like to think that Bairstow might become Prior's successor for England and become an equally if not more talented all rounder.
