Whilst sitting next to Solly March's shirt on a stadium tour earlier in the week. ( l got told off for touching it ), l was surprised to be told by our tour guide Julie, that Solly would only be wearing that shirt the once, for our game against Fulham this Saturday.

Until very recently shirts, ( and presumably the rest of the kit too ), would be washed and irones after use and then reused. Not any more apparantly, as all shirts are now signed and auctioned off to potential buyers after just one game..

Saves on the laundry l guess! In the old days l can remember old Jock Riddell the kitman had that job.

Surely having so many signed shirts lowers their value. Paying £500 for a shirt one day only to see another for sale the next day would be anoying.

Not quite. A lot of games have their own 'story', e.g. March v palace, that was the shirt he scored against them. Even then there are only 38 shirts a season. With a fan base of a few hundred thousand potential buyers 38 is very limited supply.

Yep! one of the players shirts that was hanging there, even still had the new Nike tag hanging from it, that you see when you buy a replica shirt from the superstore.

Jock Riddell. Top man, issuer of many a comp at the old away matches. Most of us who were at the entrance got one in those days. Rest in peace old chap.

I don't know about our players, but many top players like to wear a fresh, unsweaty shirt for the second half.

That was a Potter tactic wasn't it, play like the home team in the first half, then having hit the woodwork 3 times and failed to score, switch shirts at half time and play like the away team?

He got it the wrong way round against Wolves that time.

Or Chris H's tactics of go 1-0 up in the fifth minute, switch shirts, and play like the away team for 85 minutes.

In the proper olden days, they only had 12 shirts, 1-12. And whoever was picked had to fit in the same shirt that someone else had worn last week.

38 games x 20 players in the squad is 760 shirts available. Yes, the limited edition Poppy shirts are worth more, but only taking the playing team it's still over 300 shirts.

I mean this is quite common I suppose. I have always had 2 shirts whilst playing for my non-league club here in The Netherlands as if it's raining, there is nothing worse than sitting there for 15 minutes in wet clothes for them to dry somewhat, just to get them drenched again. You just don't play as well if you're miserable.


Mind you, we only get 2 shirts of each kit a year, and the club will order on a need-to basis if it gets ripped/damaged. Not sure we could quite afford to get 34 shirts a season.
