I've also seen the first three episodes. I'm not sure if I will continue to watch it. WW2 Aviation movies tend to be pretty much the same. Fire in engine 3. Roger. No fuel. Roger. Just 15 out of 30 came back. Roger. I'll see if I can find Memphis Belle instead, that's one of the better.

I think youā€™ve hit the nail on the head there.

I don't mind it. The effects are spectacular and don't detract in my view. I didn't really see much RAF bashing either, but maybe because I know nothing about the 100th / RAF so don't know what is being omitted.

Like someone said above, anything involving planes is going to be a bit formulaic compared to following action on the ground, there are only so many incidents that can possibly occur and half the scenes are with guys with masks over their faces and muffled voices which makes getting much from the characters a bit tricky.

Yeah its certainly getting better.
Episode 4 initially annoyed me in terms of how can they do that to a main character and not show it, but from the pov of those on the ground that's exactly how it would've happened in terms of just not coming back. E5 today was pretty brutal and sobering.

Thought episode 4 was dull and disjointed. The only interesting point in it was the disappearance of new crews straight away and no one knowing their names.

My TV pod guys appear to have been pretty spot on regarding this show, but it's now taken a turn.

Ep 5 has a different director and a completely different feel.
CR was talking of the show as a 'what might have been'.

His suggestion is if you gave up early on, skip what you've missed and 'start' at Ep 5.
Sure you might not have a handle on the whole series but 5 onwards is the show you were probably expecting.

Totally agree with you SBā€¦Iā€™ve stuck with it (love the opening music) and felt something different (in a positive way)after watching Episode 5

This has been a slow burner but I am pleased I stuck with it. I found it a little dull to start of with.

Band Of Brothers was excellent. However, the majority of the cast managed to pull through to the end of the war and beyond.

Masters of the Air shows the (extreme) downside of war, as shown in episode 5. I certainly wasn't expecting the wipeout.

I see his point, but I do think you will miss something if you do, what made episode 5 so shocking was it happening to almost all the main characters

Has anyone seen the film Bombardment (The Shadow in My Eye) It's a Danish film following the ill fated Operation Carthage in Copenhagen.

It was quite controversial as it had elements that were actually pure fiction but that aside it's a decent film, had the highest budget of any Danish film. The main character, Peter was my great Uncle who sadly died in the raid.

"Those Who Fall" by John Muirhead is a good book for the viewpoint of an American bomber pilot. He was based in Italy before being shot down and becoming a POW, and from memory it's quite poetically written and not in any way at all gung-ho or as cliche ridden as the average war film.

The trust is better than fiction, I have just finished Cinderella Boys by Leo Mckinstry, which was a great read full of memoirs and archives re Coastal Command, which lead the air assault against the Uboats amongst other duties. Some incredible stories from incredibly brave men.

https://vcgca.org/our-people/profile/131/Kenneth-CAMPBELL

It received a citation from the USAAF for its success in rescuing crews shot down over the sea, which was circa 40% of downed crews an incredible statistic given how many would have been dead before/after impact. The commander of the USAAF referenced how the Coastal Command rescue service was vital part to how the staff maintained good morale with US bomber crews.

I donā€™t doubt there was rivalry between the USAAF and RAF services but plenty of respect too.
