Where does it say that the intention is for head to head contests as opposed to trying to find out who is the best cook. There will only be one winner but it's better they are competing in the latter stages against the best rather than dross who got through purely on the luck of the draw. I very much expect it will change when the quarter finals take place. Not sure this is or ever has been about being a 'cup' competition!!!!

If it's really meant to find the best at each stage then surely they need to see every contestant at every stage before making any through/not through decisions? That means scoring points and after all 186 contestants have been seen the top 30 or whatever go through.

I think they should go to penalties if the judges can't decide. That's the magic of the Masterchef Cup. Imagine 17 year old Tyler who works in McDonalds beating Tarquin, a doctor, my dad's a chef, wannabe bisto owner, A proper giant killing.
