They had marquees up for a boxing tournament last night. i spoke to the guys clearing up and they are in a rush to be ready for Weds. They have bought new goal posts and new dugouts although those haven't arrived yet.

Yep, they still speak affectionately about OGH. Apparently quite a few clubs were scouting him at the time .

does any one know what alerted us to OGH in the first place? Was he playing as a striker and banging in the goals. Stansted to BHA was a massive step up and it is surprising that he managed it so well

Well, whatever the chairman says , this is Jeff Wood's account of what happened.

He told me that the Stansted ground was only a short distance away from where he lived, and a neighbour kept going on about a forward there who should be playing in the League. Jeff was at a loose end one day when the Albion didn't have a game, so he took up his neighbours challenge to go and watch Gary play. He was so impressed with what he saw that he accompanied Nobby Horton to watch him too, in a later game.

It was after that that DK became involved with the proceedings, and the rest is history. It might have been a disastrous period for the Albion when Jeff managed us, but he is the real reason for the Albion being blessed with such a loyal devoted servant to our great team.

Get on down to the Withdean on Saturday to show your appreciation for the legend who is OGH. (If you have the time and the means you could also boost Stansted's gate on Wednesday night.)

PS. I've just noticed an irony here. Gary's testimonial is against Charlton and Jeff Wood used to play in goal for them. It would be great to see Woody there on Saturday, but the last I heard of him he was coaching in Malta.

Both accounts are correct, but if you check with Craggsy it was Jeff who watched Gary first and alerted Nobby of his potential.

That could well be the case. When scouting for Barry Lloyd I suggested signing Paul Rogers from Sutton but George Aitken went and looked at him and said he wasnt good enough and was too old. I think at the time he was about 25.

I wrote to Lloyd and suggested he watched a young Dartford midfielder called Andy Hessenthaler. I did not receive a reply.
