How is the "stable door" relevant? A horse is either in the stable or not? Shutting the door after it has gone out does not reduce the amount of horse outside. Masks should have been used sooner, but if you accept they work to reduce infection why not use them? Should people not bother washing hands and socially distancing?

Perhaps refer to US’s reply firstly and of course it’s relevant. ..and there is a lot of contradictory evidence as regards to their worth since you ask...and where have I said not wash hands .. you should do that virus or no virus ..as regards to social distancing I’ve found mask wearers worse than non

I’ve finished with my quick visit to the sub forum ta ta

Erm if you don't think they work then the stable door anology is" irrelevant" as it doesn't make any sense? I didn't say you mentioned washing hands but if you're saying either we shouldn't bother with masks because it's too widespread or has gone away I wondered if there was a difference in your mind?

Seen an online poll today today with 45% of people saying they won't be wearing a mask. Suggests people aren't really signed up to complying with this requirement.

The shops aren't really going to enforce it, and challenging people without a mask on who may have an exemption may not be reasonable.

I think we are probably going to carry on as we were- some people choosing to wear masks, some not. Maybe more wearing masks initially but I think within a few days / weeks we will be back at a similar proportion of mask-wearers to what we had prior to today's rule change. Which were I live was about 5-10% mask-wearers, 90-95% not.

All those £100 fines will help lower government borrowing.

Definitely a lot more people wearing masks today. However, the corollary, as partly predicted by some, is that the 2m (or even 1m) rule is now being somewhat abandoned. The local butcher has a 2 people only rule, which has generally been well-observed. That observance seems to have disappeared overnight. Similar in the other shops.

Sadly, that was my biggest fear.

I haven't even said my actual excuse yet as I like to keep my medical history to myself. All I was doing was stating how contradictory the governments scientific evidence was.

If I am sat down doing nothing, I can just about wear a mask. When up and walking about, forget it. I have an asthma related breathing condition. When wearing a mask and walking about, I struggle to breathe in a natural fashion almost to the point when I start to hyperventilate. If this had been about 10+ years ago, when I was fitter, I may not have had such an issue.

It's the single minded attitude demonising all people not wanting to wear one under the same umbrella that has made me decide not to even bother going to the shops etc now, as I cannot be bothered to deal with the hassle & harassment from muppets jumping to conclusions. Now feels like I'm being victimised & punished for something I cannot control. To me, this is more of a lockdown than the actual lockdown was.

Im sorry for your condition. In your case, its better you stay indoors, and friends anf family shop for you. Its inconvenient, yes. My mother has stayed in her flat since March, she is bored to death, but understands, as an ex nurse, the realilties.
Here, people wore masks. People in shops,
people serving in shops. If you didnt have a mask on, yeah, people would let you know about it
I keep seeing people talking about contrary evidence that covering your face will do this, will do that, and it may not work. The deaths (360) here prove to me they work.

Like you, I'm exempt from wearing a mask. Went to my local shop this afternoon without one and was served perfectly politely without a comment. Only thing I got was a glare from another customer, who was wearing a mask. She stopped glaring the moment I just stood there staring at her. Expect to demonised I'm afraid .... or get the idiot comments about you should stay at home

Genuine question, do you get a Mask Exempt badge?

Sorry I find your attitude quite arrogant. You have the potential to pass on an infection that has crippled the world, but not you because you are somewhat special somehow?

How many people would you say, as a percentage, are exempt? I’ve just got off a bus where 50% of the people onboard were not wearing a mask and most of those were young ladies in their teens and 20s.

I’m sorry but these people are taking the piss. They are risking lives and they are risking the economy. I think people should be asked to justify their non wearing. If you’re able to type on here why you don’t need to wear one it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to say it out loud.

Is this the new normal then, masks to be worn in shops, public transport etc until a vaccine is found even though that might not ever happen?

If necessary, why not. Its been in place a day, and you would have thought it had been in place for years.

Not exactly. I do have a card from B&H buses showing I'm exempt and it's hung on a sunflower lanyard that most major supermarkets recognise as identifying some one who is exempt or might require extra help due to a hidden condition. Doctors won't issue certificates to prove exemption.

I sincerely hope not and I don't think that will be the case.
We may never find a vaccine and may have to learn to live with it, but I can't see masks being worn for ever and a day. Likewise, there will come a time, hopefully in the not too distant future, when social distancing will no longer be necessary. Whilst SD remains a requirement, social and economic life cannot return to normal.

Interesting. How did you get the card if doctors won't issue certificates?
