Things seem to have gone a bit flat here, maybe the realisation has set in that the Big Fella is no longer about but Martyn / Mung / Manatee would not have wanted us to do anything other than have a bloody good time so come on everyone, remind everyone you know, forget the mortgage and the credit card debts, forget the wife, oops maybe not, forget the stress of work, let’s rev up the Zimmer frames, see if the memory cells still work, get ready to test our drinking ability and go back in time to celebrate the life and times of a bloody good mate.

And don’t forget that damn flag !

It really is time to grow old disgracefully, for Martyn, he would not have wanted it any other way.

Bless his heart...that last pic looks like he lost quite a bit of weight or is it just the picture? On night shifts, in the comms center, myself and the supervisor, Bob Summerfield would lock chairs and chase him round the office pretending to be eskimo whale fisherman....
He was on a sponsored diet at one point (I sponsored him for 10p an acre) and my missus who was doing something with the cleaning at Amex, caught him in the stairwell trying to ram a ham roll down his neck...of course I didnt tell anybody....hahaha

He really was one of the nicest people ive ever met, and he didnt have a bad word for anybody. He was always telling me to come down the South Stand for matches, but all my friends were Northstand people so I never did, and reading the thread, I regret that...

Did he ever have a complete, working Austin Healey? I hope so.

Ha. Interesting to hear what went on in the comms room after hours! I worked at Amex from '98-'03 up on the 5th Floor. Although I didn't spend much time with Martyn, he was obviously well known and a very popular figure - and very respectful to us youngsters who were just getting started in our careers at 17yrs old. I think I even gave a lift home to his daughter one time.

Was definitely sad to hear that he'd passed, but it's obvious from reading the comments that he was always very well liked and certainly lived a full and happy life. Unfortunately, I'm not able to make the memorial as I'm nowhere near the area anymore.

'86 to 2001

Started in TCDU, then via Computer Ops (I think we were called) ended up being TUPE'd over to Xerox in '96 but stayed in Amex House until (keeeeerching) redundancy in 2001.

His name is Phil Kemp and after leaving the Post Office he joined the gas board, can't think how he got the job. I don't know about the record in the Burrell, he can still be seen in Lindfield but he is a real wreck.

When we dropped him off after Lux at the end of Sydney and Oathall Roads (before the roundabout was built) he said, "That looks like a nice bit of hedge to sleep in" staggered off the bus still wearing his Union Jack suit, curled up under the hedge and went to sleep. We left him there and laughed all the way home.

Another time, he is alleged to have fallen off his bar stool in the Linden Tree, now back to it's old name The Stand Up, with a pint in each hand and landed flat on his back without spilling a drop.

Now that is dedication.

i once saw him enter the Witch on crutches, get completely pissed then ask Gerry Ryan to call him a cab. When the cab turned up Phil walked out to unaided, leaving the crutches propped up against the bar

I knew that Gerry Ryan was a miracle worker, first the winner at Notts Forest to stop their unbeaten record and now curing Phil of a broken leg.

can i just say a quick hello to everyone who was the savannah on saturday. I felt it a truly fitting recognition of the love and respect people have for martyn. I will write a more full thanks to all those old friends i met. i found it a wonderful occasion. Geoff

Martyn's service - Sunday

enjoyed Saturday night and good to see a whole host of people I used to know from the Amex days. I will now be able to attend Sunday at Worthing and look forward to meeting some of the fellas again although it won't quite feel like Saturday night's bash!
