Martin Samuel in The Mail today - Brighton Beware

Brighton
I just don't get the 'holier than thou' attitude about Palace being shafted into two administrations by poor owners when you lads are positively crowing about £300M being spent by your owner. The only difference being that Tony Bloom had considerably deeper pockets than Goldberg or Jordan.

That attitude only comes out due to specific irritants. You can blame the Away end of your BBS, where incessant general nastiness is the rule, is taken seriously by some, and seems to take root in petty minds as "common knowledge". Extremely common knowledge, for the most part. Trolls from there come here, wind everybody up, and various falsehoods of attitude are perpetuated due to everyone getting antagonised.

Albion's many struggles are of course reordered negatively by Palace imps. The long suffering support is impugned. Everything good that has happened with the club and our reasons for joy has shit poured on it. Is it any wonder we beat you back with whatever sticks we have?

In your defence, not yours personally you seem reasonable and all that, but in "defence" of the trolls, we should look at the truth - that we've been through a lot of crap and the feelgood factor reflects and is relative to that. Silly little minds don't like to see others happy - or they like to toy with the same. That's why we get our optimism and the occasional over-excited outpourings represented as proof of "arrogance" or "delusion" or whatever else.

But it should be said that the attitude of CPFC fans / trolls about Albion's spending is ridiculous, and much more a part of the culture described above than anything sane. Imagine coming out with all that shit in front of a neutral.

Palace: ALBION SPENT £300 MILLION TO GET PROMOTED, IT'S A DISGRACE
Neutral: NWOH MY ****ING GOD WHAT?!!!
Albion: Literally almost all on the stadium and training facilities.
Neutral: Oh, right. Well that happens once in a lifetime I suppose
Palace: LALALALALALA FFP! LLAALALALA
Albion: ...we're thrilled with the upturn in fortunes at our club and they don't seem to like it

*

But... isn't it boring? It all just runs and runs, which is fine, as long as you aren't taking it seriously.

Or, long story short, we should all stop taking whatever the club twats are saying as the rule for the rest, rivalry or not. It's almost like we all enjoy asking the village idiot for directions, then wondering where the path's suddenly gone and why are we up to our knees in shit.

Yeah I will admit to not being a fan of his work (because it's utter guff) but I did at least give him the courtesy of reading it through before commenting before making my mind up. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree as to how interesting this piece actually is.

Fair enough, we all have writers who we like and we don't. Samuel, Winter, Walsh, Kay. Like all of those.

Not that Szczepanik bloke though. He's CACK

The people who get 'shafted' by administrations are the creditors. Palace walked away scot free having had their debts wiped twice and continued to compete with clubs that still carried their debts. Crystal Palace FC were not victims, they were perpetrators.

A very succinct point well put, and one which I fully expect essexeagle to ignore entirely. But then he doesn't really seem to grasp the difference between investing in a clubs infrastructure for the long term, and blowing umpteen millions on your Atillio Lombardos and Tomas Brolins, before it all goes tits up and you start again.

On the contrary...I remember it well

So going from Withdean to spending 300 million pounds within a decade is OK within the spirit of financial fair play is it?

You do understand the difference between investing in the long term interests of a fotball club and spunking millions that was clearly unsustainable? I suggest you go away, learn what FFP actually is all about then come back and admit that you've been a div.

Building a new stadium (with surrounding infrastructure) and training facility does not contravene FFP in spirit or real terms. The fact that we have recovered as a football club irritates the crap out of you lot (literally in the case of your coach driver). You now know that long term we are streets ahead. Maybe not yet in football terms but thanks to an astute businessman our future is considerably brighter. Palace have been spunking money on players whilst the shithole continues to crumble-the time is coming when your Premier League money needs spending on a total refurb. Guess what? We don't have that problem thanks again to Tony Bloom.

Not forgetting a touch more class and dignity.

And doing things methodically: Build from the ground up and don't pander to supporters calling for more multi millions to be spent on players when the club isn't yet ready for that. A more complete opposite to the Palace way you'll never find. Phucking great innit? :albion2:

Yes. Not only within the spirit of FFP, but within the letter of FFP.

FFP allows for infrastructure and youth training to be exempt from the spending limits it imposes for VERY GOOD REASON - The FL want to encourage the upgrading of facilities and training, not punish it !

If spending on stadiums was punished everyone would end up playing in decaying dumps like.... Selhurst !

This is all news to me, do we know what actually happened then?

Something along the lines of Holloway using the situation to gee up his team before the game, i.e. 'This is what Brighton think of us'. It was known by palace that their bus driver did the deed but yet the palace management allowed the story to continue in the national and even international media. Whilst we were suffering from being knocked out of the play-offs, we also had the indignity of the condemnation from the news outlets. Our club was dragged through the mud needlessly when all that was needed was admittance of culpability by palace when it was discovered that the unholy mess was nothing to do with the Albion. Brighton had a far-ranging investigation, which can't have been pleasant on any measure, into who caused the problem with suspicion falling on our own hard-working employees.

It's no surprise that palace did not proffer any sort of retraction or apology, their action and lack of class are in fitting with a club that refuses to pay St John's and rips off local businesses whilst hanging onto their best players to the disadvantage of those teams around them who in the hard times have cut their cloth accordingly. It reminds me of the Thatcher quote that appeared in another thread 'The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money'. This evidentally does not apply to crystal palace sadly and they have enjoyed an elevated position for the past twenty years which was totally borne from cheating the system.

Rant over!

You forgot to mention that as well as letting The Albion's reputation go down the toilet (no pun intended), they even made jokes about the incident at their end of season gathering I think it was. A truly classless excuse for a football club.

Classless is as classless does.

I am proud that despite all our tribulations we currently have a well run community club that is enjoying some success.

That lot up the road have taken the spiv approach and are still struggling in the bottom part of the league.

I know which club I would rather be part of.

F*ck me but Essexeagle is hardwork. Using FFP as a stick to beat us with yet admitting that he hasn't a clue what it's about isn't the brightest thing to do.

Plus, it was not building a new stadium and a new training ground. It was building a stadium and a training ground. We did not have either until Tony Bloom came along, yes it could have been done cheaper, but we needed both of these things to continue to operate as a viable football club. So we spent £150m ish just to get to the level that all our competitors were at already.

Palace, already had a stadium and a training ground, have earned (at a guess) £400m in four seasons in the Premier League. Yet they have only bought some cladding. It is a bit much to complain about our Tony Bloom windfall, when they have earned more than that from being in the Premier League and spunked it all on Cabaye and Benteke.

Brian Reade in a second rate journalist and has always had a bit of the shock jock about him. Always best ignored. As for Martin Samuels, now he is different gravy and certainly one of the best out there. Surprising then that he could be bothered with writing a piece that should surely have been filed away in the 'Stating the bloody obvious' drawer.

No - That's the last thing which would happen. Too much money and effort has gone into getting to the Premier, so staying there and stabilising the club financially has to be the priority.

A good thing about being in the PL is that you come into cups at a later points so if you get lucky draws in the early rounds where fringe players can get you through and suddenly you find yourselves in the quarter final. Then MAYBE, just MAYBE, depending on injury and suspension positions and league position at that point. Thats when you look at the cups but you don't target cups early on.

No you come into the League Cup at round 3 instead of 2 that's all.

Personally I don't see why we cant do both.

I would expect us to try and achieve a legitimate trip to Wembley (I don't count only being allowed 3,000 fans there when we play Spurs) and think this will be the sort of success TB thinks we can achieve.

European football by either cup would suit me whether it means winning one of them or playing one of the top 4 in the final so you qualify.

Next season:

We'll win a few
We'll lose a few (probably more than a few)
We'll target 17th as the success benchmark

But above all......

Let's enjoy the ride, whatever happens.

Indeed. One of the things I'm not looking forward to is precious, over-sensitive Albion fans getting too upset over various press articles.

The fact is that the PL comes with huge scrutiny, and from people who may know little about us (or football), may not even like us, but get paid to give their opinion. There is no point getting in a rage each time this happens, or you'll go mad.

So when Robbie Savage or Adrian Durham start saying Chris Hughton should be sacked in September, simply remember they are clowns, and from where Hughton has dragged us. Stick with the manager, the players, and the board, ignore the shite, and we'll be fine.
