The Normans had been settled in northern France for between 100 and 200 years by the time they invaded England. Several generations had grown up there.
In my book that makes them French.

Talking of "French" or "English" in the 11th century makes no sense.

Well, there is that.
But the Normans came from what is now northern France. Their ancestors were from what is now Scandinavia.
And they invaded what is now England.
If they identified as French I would agree.
