came back from Marrakech last week - just think of a Hollywood film set for Djema El Fna (the night market) . did a day in the Atlas mountains and also got the train to Casablanca for the day. Great going first class, 3.5 hours each way watching the scnenery go by. Wish i could have stayed longer

Agadir is a lot more accommodating for standard tourists. i.e play football in pub, loads of places to drink.

Marrakesh, more culture but not too much to do.

Went last summer, would recommend say four days in marrakesh and maybe a week on the beach in agadir, can get the bus down for bout £8-10

Spot on.

3 or 4 days in Marrakesh is enough

Got back from Morocco yesterday afternoon.

Spent three days in Marrakech and two days out by the coast (Essaouira and Oualidia) and there couldn't be more of a contrast.

Marrakech is mental; noisy, hot, dirty, full of people trying to sell you stuff, mopeds mixing it with donkeys on the streets, crazy souks with narrow alleys where you can get lost for ages. It's an experience, but not one I'd choose if you want a relaxing holiday. Two days there was enough really, we spent the third day relaxing in the riad away from all the madness. There's not a huge amount in terms of nightlife, the only places serving alcohol are the restaurants and everything has pretty much wound down by about half eleven.

Not been to Agadir but as others have mentioned I've heard it's your typical beach holiday destination like the Costa or somewhere. Like others have said, Essaouira is the place to go for a chilled out beach holiday with a more authentic Moroccan feel.

The ramparts of the ancient city walls are also a good place to watch the sun set over the sea and ask your girlfriend to marry you!

Agadir is modern following earthquake in the 60s... its clean, its westernised, the tourist police look out for the tourists..quite nice hotels and beach is ok...

Marrekesh is more your actual Morocco imo
Big square with lots of 'entertainment'...story tellers, dancers, snake charmers etc.. souks...

Depends what you want...
spot on, it really depends on what you are after - relaxing resort or mental arab/african mayhem - for me Marrakesh was more interesting, Agadir a bit sterile but that was almost 20 years ago....

Are there no bars? Am now looking at going just for a long weekend.

Am getting a hankering to try Morocco after reading this thread. Want to go to Laos but will have to wait til next year for that due to budgetary reasons, but 5 days in North Africa sounds do-able.

Geographically and value-wise, is it feasible to do a couple of days in Marrakesh, 2/3 in Fez and 2 in Essaouira?

Didn't really like either to be honest. Best party of Morocco for me was the countryside. Went to Ourzazate and Zagora which were both beautiful places in the mountains and in the desert. Also went to Essaouira which is definitely alot nicer than Agadir but still quite touristy... Have heard Fez is the place to visit though!
