Mark McGhee - not what I expected

I thought Mark McGhee would have been a feirce Scot who took no sh*t and held no prisoners and if he was not happy would have given you the old Glaswegian handshake.

However it appears more and more that he is infact a bit of a soft touch who certainly does not instill any fear or motivation in the players. He has never on the radio said " that was bloody awful " or " that is unacceptable, heads will roll ". He sounds very blaise with soundbites such as " Grimsby would be unhappy if over the 90 minutes they did not win ", " Luton would have been unhappy if over the 90 mniutes they hadn't won "

He is in a very favourable position in so far as he is probably the only mananger in the land who is not judged on results and infact there is no pressure on him to perform whatsoever as there are far more important things of the pitch to worry about.

He is turning rapidly into a Martin Hinshelwood, nice bloke but can't get the results.

Can we bring Brian Horton back , pleae dick ?.

What d'ya think ?.

If I was a player, I would not rely on that.

Mark McGhee bolloxed the Millwall supporters in public for not getting behind their team.

Don't you think Baloonboy that the manager owes a duty to the paying fans to say somethimes " That was unacceptable, our away record is shite, its not good enough " rather than " Luton would have been very hard done by if they had not won the game over the 90 minutes ".

I take your point, but it's difficult to say that to the fans without being publicly critical of the players. McGhee knows the score, and so do the players - many of them would be out on their arses if we had any money to spend, and will definitely be gone come June. Unfortunately that's why they're playing crap. It requires a super-human effort to motivate the likes of Mayo, Watson, Hart, etc, when their confidence is low and the writing is writ large. McGhee has to be very careful to keep the youngsters' morale in tact - he's obviously keen to bring on the likes of Virgo, El Abd, Robinson and McPhee - no point in slagging off the team in public, it will only destroy the confidence of the inexperienced youngsters. There are ways of managing this difficult situation, and I think McGhee is choosing the right way.

Good managers never bollock their team in public.

Absolutely no washing your dirty linen in public like Glenda Hoddle does

Coppell never did though did he? That's one of the Reading fans problems with him as it goes.

I think McGhee has quickly realised that you can't polish a turd.

One of my all time favourite expressions El Pres and very true

The one thing that is a tad worrying is that when we are playing badly, we seem as inept in the second half. Normally Adams or whoever would have them in at half time and lay into them or whatever and you would see a vague improvement in the second half. However certainly at Luton, the second half there was no change. This must be down to one of two things, eithe McGhee cannot motivate the players or the players no longer care. If it is the latter then those players should be banished to the reserves end of. If it is that the manager cannot motivate the troops then I am afraid we have a problem.

This is a long-term project. Plymouth at home showed me that McGhee has enough nous to do the job well given time and resources. Once we get a YES on Falmer, he should be given both - then we'll see.

I didn't think Mark McGhee was a good appointment and my view on that hasn't changed, although obviously he has my support 100% while he's Albion manager (it's not like I've got anything better to do.) He doesn't inspire confidence and having mates who are Wolves fans doesn't help.

You can see what Millwall fans thought of him here.

Working in South East London I know a lot of Millwall fan and the first thing many of them said to me when he took over is that he does not like to upset anyone and is too accomodating. They said he often played players out of position just to keep in their good books.

After reading that I am seriously worried what will happen to us in the close season if he is still here!!
He has already got some of our lot playing out of position ie;Watson,Virgo!!

I have to say I thought that by now we would look a more solid team under is management than seems to be the case. However, there is a large amount of people on NSC who seem to feel that wholesale changes are needed, and when this was last the case under Micky Adams he took a bit of time to get things right. So I will delay full judgement until the end of the season to see how we do.
