[Film] Mark Kermode

Blighty’s long-standing film critic, but imho he seems to rate many films that are utter gash. Obviously it’s a subjective sport, but what do NSC’s resident film buffs make of his selections (currently a regular BBC homepage fixture)?

His review, which I watched post viewing, of this was spot on, imho.

Mostly like his reviews, but he is correct to say that he has a tin ear for comedy. Doesn’t “get” the genre at all imo.

For balance, I enjoy whenever he talks about horror, a specialist subject of his.

His views are considered rather than polemical and tend to resonate with mine if I have seen the film he's on about, and I like listening to his programme. I was at the Comsat Angels gig in Sheffield where he introduced them on stage so there is some overlap in music taste too. Because he is thoughtful if he backs something I don't like (not a big fan of The Exorcist, for example) I can see why I won't share his enthusiasm, and move on.

I quite like him as a reviewer but I find his double act with Mayo rather grating. All that "wussup, wussup - hello to Jason Isaacs - wittertainment" stuff is just embarrassing.

Apart from his constant references to The Exorcist, Mary Poppins, Silent Running and Dougal and the Blue Cat, Kermode is a good film critic who usually offers a fair opinion on those things they used to show when we had cinemas.

Agree with that ...but never tire of listening to that show

Generally agree with his assessment although at times he’s too far aligned to the Guardian viewpoint of life (Wolf of Wall Street for example).

He’s not great on comedy, and we are poles apart on another specialist genre, and frankly he greatly underestimated the pathos, character development, nuance, moral compass and quantities of jizz in European Cumbath 28. I won’t give away the ending of the movie, but a bit like Titanic, it will have you reaching for the tissues.

Not a lot wrong with that film, great plot, Margot Robbie in the altogether and dwarf throwing for starters.

I used to have a general sense of respect for the man and his views, but after hearing El Presidente' searing assessment of him, I now declare Kermode to be a total buffoon.

I like him a lot, along with Philip French best film reviewers for me. While he has his likes and dislikes I think he always tries to judge a film on its merits and aim,I don't think many others do.

I'd agree with him about Wolf of wall Street, like most recent Scorsese it's an hour too long and to me just came across as a poor tribute to Goodfellas

I’ve read a few of his books (one arrived signed by him, which was nice), half of them needed trimming but were enjoyable, and I like his two favourite films: The Exorcist and Silent Running.

He’s a bit of a lefty, which makes reviews for the likes of Sex and the City 2 quite funny, but can be grating on other occasions.

I agree with him that cinemas need projectionists and better trained staff although I wish he’d defend celluloid over digital, although if he doesn’t have any strong feelings on that then so it goes...

He’s changed his mind on his previous position that cinema films are always better than television programmes. It’s actually logical that he did. It’s hard to argue that Captain Marvel is better than Breaking Bad, for example, but it was funny that he had such a strong conviction about it.

I’ve seen him speak about the video nasty issue of the Eighties and wish he’d write a book about that.

As a person I find him irksome but he clearly knows ‘his’ stuff. That is often a problem for reviewers as it’s such a subjective medium.

I tend to find he doesn’t, like some, court controversy and be contrarian for the sake of it. He’s no Chris Sutton or Robbie Savage to give a football analogy.

I don't always agree with his views on films, and there doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. Sometimes I agree with him on comedies, sometimes I don't, sometimes I disagree with him on horror, sometimes I don't etc.

But he is someone whose reviews are based in a breadth of film knowledge and bathed in film history, almost academically framed, and aren't just about whether the film is good or not. I tend to find that more interesting. I don't want a critic to tell me whether I should like a film or not, I want a critic that opens my mind to deeper meanings and references and generally he does that.

Siskel and Ebert are highly regarded in America amongst film buffs, but whenever I see clips of them I just see two prissy old hens clucking away. Or two old women at a mothers meeting.

All critics are a waste of space - they get paid for a personal opinion. I don't expect people to like or dislike my taste in films, television, food or anything else. I go to the cinema to see what attracts me and I would never bother to read a "so called" experts opinion as a means of deciding whether I go or not.
