Marina Moaners

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
Far too many letters coming in, objecting to the new development in the Marina. I am getting fed up of people objecting to progress.

The Marina has been tatty in that part, for too long. The argument, blocking out sea views is a very poor argument. From the flats at the top, they can see the whole expanse of the British Channel.

Housing in Brighton is saturated and new developments must be welcomed with open arms.

I appreicate that they have the right to object, but I am getting fed up with all these moaners.

Brighton Station, Gehry Towres, Falmer Stadium, Marina Tower Block etc etc

Letter: Same problems, different tower
As residents of the project area for the proposed tower at Brighton Marina, we strongly object to it.

A tower block with 1,000 residential units is at odds with the marina and will restrict the sea view.

Whereas some skyscrapers have some architectural merit, the same can't be said of most high-rise blocks.

Parking facilities are already near saturation point and car access at weekends is difficult.

The proposed development will create a hazard to public wellbeing and safety.

-Svein and Randi Waage, Brighton

Letter: Viewing restrictions
As a local resident and council tax payer, I object to the plans for the marina development.

I also object to the way the plans have been made available to the public.

The fact they can only be viewed from Monday to Friday, in office hours, is a huge barrier to getting feedback.

And I am particularly annoyed the development's images aren't available on the developer's web site.

-Kenneth Ball, Brighton

Letter: An ugly tower
We live in Arundel Street, Brighton, and are horrified at the prospect of the marina being ruined by an ugly tower.

It is presently a pleasant place. If it's going to be built, we'll refuse to visit it.

totally agree with you there BarrelofFun, there's too many NIMBYs and moaners willing to complain about any sort of change or development. Having seen the pictures I reckon it looks fantastic and provide much needed new housing.

I'm sure the Marina owners will be devastated to know that Margaret and Lazslo Beer will not be visiting any more

:lolol:

God Brighton is a depressing place sometimes.

Does anywhere else on the planet have so many objectionable people? You can't build so much as a wendy house without some miserable old buffer starting a campaign against is and writing incessantly to the Argus.

Never mind all these individual groups, perhaps they should just form one big society and be done with it.

They could call it

Brighton And Hove Against Absolutely Anything Being Built Anywhere, Ever, Because In Spite Of Us Taking Every Opportunity To Moan About The Current Era, We Nonetheless Want The City To Stay Like It Forever And Never Progress (Except For All The Poor People, Gays, Immigrants, Yobs And Hoodies).

Or BAHAABBAEBISOUTEOTMATCEWNWTCTSLIFANPEFATPPGIYAH for short.

You missed out the West Pier and the waste disposal facilities at Hollingdean and Peacehaven.

There's little doubt that Brighton is home to some fanatical BANANAs (Build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything) and they're getting more strident.

What gets me about most of them is that they moan that Brighton hasn't get the infrastructure to cope with more people but quite a large number have moved here themselves.

And when the council does want to do something about the infrastructure (ie the new waste disposal) they moan about that too.

Burn them, I say.

Or they move into places where the local plan states quite clearly that development will be likely in future nearby.

And then they complain about development :dunce:

The free state of Kemp Town
Bugger. I'm moving into Arundel Street later this month, what'll happen to my precious sea view?

Mind you the whole area around the Marina needs smartening up and should be more pedestrian friendly. It's a concrete nightmare trying to get into that place

Why should Peacehaven deal with Brighton's waste?

It's like them building a huge sewage plant in Hove to deal with the excrement from Croyden.

I personally have nothing against them building more houses in the sout east but that's all they seem to do.

Where are the children going to go to School given the large class sizes?

How are they going to get about given the shite state of our roads in this area?

WHat happens if they get ill given that our hospitals are already fit to burst?

What are they going to drink given that we don't have enough water to service our current residents?

There are plenty of houses in Brighton (despite what we are told) it is simply a case of too few people owning too many houses.

Building more houses is a quick fix that won't work.

The arse end of Hangleton
*** puts on his flame proof coat ***

I have to admit to being a little bit of a nimby !!!!!

- I object to the plans for the King Alfred. I think it should be a leisure centre for a leisure rather than housing with a leisure centre as a second thought. And the design is crap anyway !!!

- I fully object to park and ride at Patcham.

- I obviously wanted Falmer.

- I like the tower idea at the marina.

Suppose that makes me half a nimby !!

The trouble with the idea of a leisure centre purely for leisure is that it would have to be funded by council tax payers - there are plenty of people moaning about council tax already without putting in another hefty increase.

I agree about the P&R though - that seems a pointless scheme.

A Nim or a By- take your pick!

I have mixed views of the King Alfred development. I think some revolutionary architecture is a good idea, but I am not too keen on the tower.

We need Park and Rides desperately and there are not many viable spaces. It would be nice to do something with Beeding Cement Works, park and ride there?

Having said that, this reminds me of a letter to the Argus. Some chap complaining that the London to Brighton Bike Ride should be moved from Brighton as it caused terrible traffic. He said the journey into Brighton normally takes him 5 mins from half way up Dyke Rd, and his journey was increased to 40 mins! Why on earth does he drive from half way up Dyke RD?????? There is a very good bus system that is nearly always half empty at least

Just because we fought for Falmer does not mean we are now morally obliged to get behind every other planning app in Sussex.

I'm not that keen on the park & ride idea at Patcham to be honest.

Mainly because it seems a shame that however many hundred people who play football and cricket there every weekend of the year will have to move.

I'm surprised more people haven't objected on those grounds, it seems mainly to be the RSPCA at the moment, who are worried they'll lose a valuable dog toilet

;)

Many of the other developments, however, seem to be objected to purely on aesthetic grounds, in the fact that they're new and shiny, or tall, and people seem to think that Brighton & Hove can only accommodate old Regency style buildings.

Look at the fuss those people in Lewes are making over some guy building a modernist house.

As if their own properties were never new :lolol:

Makes me laugh in today's Argus, they've used a computer image of the marina (aerial view), and the impact of the tower is negligible.

And I expect that all these moaners are fed up with the poorly designed and constructed slums that developers are so keen to build. Objections should help ensure that the level of crapiness is, if not kept to a minimum, at least constrained.

It would be better to question the basis on which these developments are proposed. Most in the South East are a result of misguided central planning from the office of the fat controller. Sussex is still, just, beautiful in parts and I for one am glad that there are people who fight to protect it from excessive development.

There are channels to go about this properly, rather than moan to the local press. One of the the "Moanees" said - "The fact they can only be viewed from Monday to Friday, in office hours, is a huge barrier to getting feedback" - suggesting that he hasnt seen the plans in full.
