The cheap selling off of a nations assets under the banner of a 'property owning democracy' was bloody criminal.

I'm glad you think her intentions were always good though, you must be able to see the best in people. When she privatised the railways, I always thought it was a bit of thievery designed to make her rich friends richer. She was obviously just convinced by the brilliant arguments that existed, and still exist, for running it in private hands.

She did not privatise the railways, that was Major's mob, although they probably did it as there was nothing else left to sell, other than air.

Firms broke gov rules to sell components to iraq, you knowledge of the past is as blinkered as your politics.

Tend to agree about pinochet but then we aided the Russians in WW2 so it can hardly be seen as significant.

Perhaps, but I'd be inclined to give her less credit for the defiance she showed against:

a) the obvious problems in Northern Ireland
b) genuine peaceful Republican political leaders
c) the government of the Republic of Ireland

I love love love Margaret Thatcher she personified the phrase 'every man has the right to make what he can of himself' her policies allowed those from less privileged backgrounds to acheive things comparable to the higher classes .....if they had the nous too.

When she came to power Britain was an economic wreck, unions ran the show, our global standing was low.

With hindsight it was as near to a dictatorship as we've seen this century. Few, if any, of her Cabinet had the balls to disagree with her, she didn't like other women in positions of power and she recruited her Cabinet almost exclusively from Oxbridge, so it was a bit of a club.

I think she re-instilled a work / business ethic that we've never really lost since she's gone.

On balance I'd have to say she was 1/3rd good, 2/3rds bad.
