Very sad news today, he was legend in cycyling especially during the mountain stages - RIP:

Cyclist Marco Pantani, who has been found dead in a hotel room in Italy, did not commit suicide, according to the local magistrate Paolo Gengarelli.

"Nobody is talking about suicide and I exclude everything until the end of the autopsy," Gengarelli said.

Medical examiner Francesco Toni said Pantani died of a heart attack, for which the cause had not been found.

Pantani, whose career has been blighted by doping allegations, was found with 10 packets of prescription sedatives.

The autopsy is due to be completed on Monday morning, but investigators have ruled out violence.

Gengarelli said he was awaiting the results of the autopsy to help him reconstruct the last hours before Pantani's death.

"There are no other elements before the autopsy," he said on Sunday.

Pantani's manager, Manuela Ronchi, said the magistrate had interviewed several people during Sunday morning.

Police told a news conference on Sunday that the tranquilisers were prescription drugs, and that some of the packets were empty and some started.

Gengarelli added that Pantani had effectively secluded himself in the room for five days and left it only for breakfast.

A number of fellow riders have spoken since Pantani's death about how he had been affected since his career was derailed by doping allegations.

Last year, Pantani checked into a clinic that specialised in depression and drug addiction.

Pantani's friend Moreno Argentin, a former cyclist, said: "The last time I saw him, he was extremely bitter, a changed man."

In the mountain stages of the Tour de France, definitely one of the finest attacking riders the world has ever seen.

RIP

Sad way to go for the "pirate", couldn't cope too well with the depression and was at ease with himself only when he was racing upwards.
A troubled soul, but will be remembered for the way he danced on the pedals up those gruelling mountains.
RIP

A sad weekend for the cycling world...

Belgian cyclist Johan Sermon has been found dead from apparent heart failure in his sleep.

A radio station reported that the body of the 21-year-old rider with the Daikin team was found by his mother.

He had recently undergone a full cardiovascular check-up, according to reports.

Sermon had apparently gone to bed early on the eve of an eight-hour training ride.

Daikin team manager Ernest De Vuyst was quoted as saying that the cause of death appeared to be heart failure.

Police are investigating.

RIP Pantani
A legend - along with Indurain, Armstrong, Ulrich & LeMond
How any of them can do the Tour without "substances" defeats me (although they probably don't!) I speak as a 60 mile a week man (on Three barrels and Ruddles) and expecting to do the "Cote de Ditchling" again soon.

Definately a legend.

He was a star in the mountains and used to dance on the pedals whilst climbing the alps.

He will missed in the world of cycling.

Pantini really made the mountain stages on Tour de France worth watching. His status in cycling is hard to compare in football terms. Perhaps, compare to Figo.
