Cyclist Marco Pantani, who has been found dead in a hotel room in Italy, did not commit suicide, according to the local magistrate Paolo Gengarelli.
"Nobody is talking about suicide and I exclude everything until the end of the autopsy," Gengarelli said.
Medical examiner Francesco Toni said Pantani died of a heart attack, for which the cause had not been found.
Pantani, whose career has been blighted by doping allegations, was found with 10 packets of prescription sedatives.
The autopsy is due to be completed on Monday morning, but investigators have ruled out violence.
Gengarelli said he was awaiting the results of the autopsy to help him reconstruct the last hours before Pantani's death.
"There are no other elements before the autopsy," he said on Sunday.
Pantani's manager, Manuela Ronchi, said the magistrate had interviewed several people during Sunday morning.
Police told a news conference on Sunday that the tranquilisers were prescription drugs, and that some of the packets were empty and some started.
Gengarelli added that Pantani had effectively secluded himself in the room for five days and left it only for breakfast.
A number of fellow riders have spoken since Pantani's death about how he had been affected since his career was derailed by doping allegations.
Last year, Pantani checked into a clinic that specialised in depression and drug addiction.
Pantani's friend Moreno Argentin, a former cyclist, said: "The last time I saw him, he was extremely bitter, a changed man."
