The press are reporting that Chelsea are putting 4 players up for sale having paid a combined £161 million for them. The quartet are as follows:

Cucurella - £175K a week, 5 yrs left on contract
Disasi - £80K a week, 5 1/2 years left on contract
Noni Madueke - £50K a week, 7 yrs left on contract
Malo Gusto - £45K a week, 7 years left on contract.

So on top of the £161 million they paid I make that £102.96 million in contractual wages owed. Now I know the other 3 on the available list - Gallagher, Broja and Chalobah - cost them nothing, but even so, the figures are eye-watering.

I think Todd is about to discover the downside of offering 8 year contracts.

Caicedo one is a weird one. I have no doubt he will be one of the best DMs in football. If he isn’t already. But what they’d paid for Enzo, and the fact Rice was up for grabs massively inflated the UK DM market. For him to have gone for more than Grealish, Kane,
Bellingham, Rice etc is crazy.
Looks a steal compared to Antony though. But it’s too much for a DM.

I actually think a world class defensive midfielder should be the one of the most valuable players, because they're so rare. If you have a boat load of cash you can go buy a striker or a great attacking midfielders, there's lots about. But the truly great defensive midfielders you just can't go out and buy, you have to wait for them to appear.

im not convined Citeh did undervalue him, or at least if they did, it was not by much. A bit like the Zaha thing at Palace, Cucu was, at the time worth more to us at Brighton, than a player of his ability ,s market value was

He happened to be a perfect fit for us, but as we proved with Estupinian, not irreplaceable at much less than he went for. The £68 million was just crazy money

Is transfer listing all these players a tacit acceptance by Chelsea that they are f***ed as far as FFP is concerned, or at least some sort of aquiescence of the rules?

I think we can conclude from this that Cucurella has been a terrible signing for Chelsea.

A huge, incredibly expensive mistake that will affect them for years... and surely it'll be near impossible to get rid of him without subsidising some of his wages, or a huge pay off, or letting him go for nothing?

We, however, have done rather well out of Chelsea's mess... not for the first time either.

I do wonder if players ever examine their own decision-making later, or simply don't give a damn, knowing there will always be somebody else prepared to pay them handsomely if they're even halfway decent these days. Completely different levels, of course, but I remember John Keeley saying, later in his career, that he regretted signing with an agent who then encouraged him to leave for Oldham, where he only ever played twice and didn't have the same experience he'd had with Brighton.

Do players ever actually think, "Eff it, I should have stayed where I was," and consider their agents' motivations, I wonder? Or is it always about taking the cash and looking forward now, at least at the top levels?

I do wonder if players ever examine their own decision-making later, or simply don't give a damn, knowing there will always be somebody else prepared to pay them handsomely if they're even halfway decent these days. Completely different levels, of course, but I remember John Keeley saying, later in his career, that he regretted signing with an agent who then encouraged him to leave for Oldham, where he only ever played twice and didn't have the same experience he'd had with Brighton.

Do players ever actually think, "Eff it, I should have stayed where I was," and consider their agents' motivations, I wonder? Or is it always about taking the cash and looking forward now, at least at the top levels?

I'm sure many of them do. But hindsight is always 20/20.

At the time I recall seeing several references to his wages tripling by going to Chelsea but that could all just have been rumours and assumption.

If you’re playing at the elite level, with a bit of restraint on expenditure a player would only need 3 years income to be comfortably set up for life, and probably their kids lives too. And then you could think eff it, I’ll head off and play where I’m happy. Still gonna get paid, it just might not be as much

I think that's right - the Enzo price marker was pretty crazy, but I think Caicedo is equal to him or will be better.

I don't think so. I'm convinced professional footballers' brains aren't wired the same way as the rest of us!

If I was in a job where I wasn't happy, didn't like my colleagues and didn't feel the love from the 'customers' ('cos they ain't giving him much!) .....................I would, and did, stay in a shit job in order to pay the mortgage and bills and keep my family fed, because I had too.
BUT - if in the first 18 months I'd trousered over £12M quid (less tax, but still an eye-watering amount) and there were other employers willing to pay me a modest couple of million quid a year, I'd be happy to rip up my contract and move. £2M a year, in a happy place and being loved would be more than enough compensation for missing out on an even more astronomic pay out.
You'd probably do the same - but footballers wouldn't, they'd just see another five and a half years of £8.75M a year (with an agent constantly in their ear to get their 20% (or whatever) of it for doing f all).

From what I've seen, Disasi looks the best of those four.

It's been a few years since I read it but in the Secret Footballer book he talks about making a big money move for the wrong reasons and regretting it. It's thought the author was Dave Kitson, and he was referring to breaking the transfer record at Stoke in 2008. I might be misremembering it but I think he possibly even knew before he signed that it was the wrong decision for his career even if good for his bank balance.

I wouldn't be surprised if Moises is beginning to regret moving to Chelsea instead of Liverpool. According to some press he's been told he needs to improve with them by Poch and he's not exactly getting the love from Chelsea fans as he did with us, coupled with where Chelsea are compared to Liverpool! But hey ho, money talks and his bank balance makes him and his family happy!
