[Albion] Marc Cucurella *Signed For Chelsea 05/08/2022*

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
Ditto Adam Virgo to Celtic for £1.5m in 2005 when we were really down on our uppers. Deal probably kept the club afloat at that time. Big cheers to Mark McGhee and Gordon Strachan for the nod and the wink and delivering us that lifeline

Yes, because it had been so long since the sale of the Goldstone, Brighton had to pay Capital Gains tax on their meagre share. Adam Virgo's sale kept the taxman at bay.

It's also a bit selective from Naylor as well, to be fair. "Brighton don't stand in the way of any member of staff bettering themselves, provided the price and timing is right for the club". Or, to put another way, Brighton do stand in the way of members of staff bettering themselves if the price or timing isn't right"

Well, yeah, that’s a given. Why would we (or anyone) sell if the price and timing isn’t right ? It’s not much to ask of someone to whom we’ve given a 5 year contract. I’m surprised anybody would be surprised by that.

Beeney, Paul Holsgrove, Virgo, Saunders, Nogan (?), there have been quite a few sales that have “saved” us. Let’s hope we’ve seen the last of those days.

Marc Cucurella *SINGS on a five-year contract*

Naylor now reporting that Cucurella’s been told to stay away from training as Potter wants no distractions. Also, nothing decided on either him or Colwill, no medical sanctioned and the £52.5m widely reported is below Albion’s asking price.

Never heard of the Paul Holsgrove story (whoosh?) but Virgo to Celtic gobsmacked me at the time. Beeney was a very good keeper, Saunders and Nogan good goalscorers (although NoGoals Nogan was on a drought, after a previous splendid scoring run, when sold). But Virgo to Celtic at that fee was extraordinary.

I think we all know that the Virgo deal had a lot to do with McGhee and Strachan being pals

Pure guesswork but my feeling is we wanted £60m all along and the Colwill deal was a partial top of of the offer to avoid more cash from Chelsea. The buy back clause we know the club are not fans of so this has stalled and we have gone back and said in that case Collwill deal does not work so if want Cucurella top up fee now.

This would need either chelsea to remove buy back or Colwill deal comes out and fee goes up to £60m

Just guessing but seems this was all being reported as happening until the buy back thing popped up then the deal appears to be in a tailspin

Declan Rice won't sign a new contract with WHU which runs out in 2024, he is only 23, a full international player and getting European football in a side that has been competing for top 4 for the past 2 seasons. If rumours are to be believed, he has 'apparently' agreed a gentlemens agreement to give WHU one more year, he'll be 24, then will get his big move to MU / Chelsea next summer and WHU won't stand in his way, He's been at WHU since 14, London born, he is emotionally invested in WHU. It really is a different context to a foreign player who has only just arrived in England, been a great success to everyone's surprise and has these offers on the table.

p.s. what is the weather like in La Rochelle, we're down that way back end of next week.

West Ham have an extension option for another year to 2025. They also apparently offered him an 8 year, 200k/week new contract that he’s turned down - think you’re right re him moving next summer at which point he’ll get a huge wage hike and signing-on fee - lack of bids probably means any potential bidding clubs know he’s not moving this window. Club value him at 150m according to Moyes.

I won't believe it until Romano has tweeted it. Obvs.
