It's harsh on Cucurella that he will ultimately be remembered by us for this, just because City want to lowball us. Arsenal came in early in the window, got to our valuation of White quickly and without leaks, and they gave us money and time to buy a floppy haired defender from Getafe. White won't get crap for it as a result. City are playing hardball and Cucu will get crap for it. But the transfer request is just a formalisation of what his agents have been saying to their contacts in the media for a good week or so.
It is such a dream move for him on so many levels. He will win trophies and titles. He will get in the Spain squad and could make the World Cup this year. And he has his football academy for kids, something truly admirable, which will get so much more profile by being fronted by a CL player and international.
And if he stays he'll be a pro. There's a reason we went for him, why Pep wants him. His character and professionalism is right up there. Its a long career and he will get to the top, but it's understandable he wants to go. Perhaps he himself would have been more than happy with another year or two at Brighton, but when your hero comes calling at one of the best sides in the world, a chance to grab with both hands.
For us, I don't mind selling him. Having our best player be a full back is a luxury we don't necessarily need at this stage of our progress. Get the fee we want and there's money to spend on a Biss replacement, and tying up other stars like MacAllister on a better contract. But we do need to find a suitable replacement or we've lost both him and Burn in six months and there's a hole there. Getting that replacement will see this done.
City need him, they want him, they won't - perhaps can't - walk away. But they still have a month to test our resolve before finally paying the fee. So this could well drag on.
I'm pretty sure I will still look fondly at him whatever happens.

If he wants to go, get the best price and let him go.
Keeping a resentful player against his wishes is in nobody's best interests.

Not sure he's resentful but my take is that he sees our valuation as too high hence the transfer request. He's under contract and no doubt he will play even better so as to make that dream deal of his happen in January or this time next year. All said, we put a price on his head, every player has his price and if that valuation is met then go, with our blessings but not before!

Nobody would be at all bothered if City wanted to buy any of our players if they and their minions went about it in an honourable way. They haven't. They leaked stuff to the internet to stir the pot about another club's player for two months. They then offered less for Cucu than they got for the player he's supposed to replace and, when this got the response you'd expect, got his agent to submit a transfer request and leak it to their man. If you want him, just meet our valuation and he'll go with our blessing. If you don't agree with our valuation, then tough. It's the only one that matters.
You're partly right that nobody knows what a player is worth, but you overlook that he is worth exactly what the club that owns his contract will sell him for. Bissouma would have been worth more, but circumstances forced our hand. Cucu might be worth less, but circumstances force City's. They knew this full well before all of this began and if they weren't going to pay up, they weren't going to get him, regardless of what stupid games they played.
The problem with this way of dealing with it is that it creates a precedent that you can just cause a mess and the club will let you go cheaply. You shouldn't reward those things.
City either pay up or Marc will have to live with staying another year.

I don’t think anyone thought he was realistically staying beyond Jan tbh... and yes this summer was a distinct possibility - no denial, moreover pissed off about the way City, agents and yes the player have gone about trying to force through the move at a lower price than we’d want.
Well, that’s why I’m pretty miffed about it.

I haven't overlooked that at all, hence my quote: "a player will only move if a club offers enough for the other side to take. It doesn't matter what City offer, if Bloom doesn't want to accept it, he won't so who cares what Romano says or what City's tactics are."
They can offer what they want can't they? Up to them as it is us to say no. And according to Naylor and others, it was made known to Brighton as it would have been to Cucurella/his agents before the season ended that City wanted to sign him so leaking stuff to the internet is irrelevant and most if it is just noise regurgitated by desperate social media accounts, not the club themselves, for the benefit of fans. It will have no impact whatsoever on the clubs or players.
The whole football transfer business at the top level is just a big money game for big kids like Romano and those Sky Sports pillocks Sheth and Solhekol to get excited about and we play a part in it as much as anyone else. As a top Premier League side these days, we've just got to get used to it, there really isn't any point getting worked up about it.

What I haven’t been able to fathom all along is that City are a club well known for paying whatever it takes. £100mill for grealish stands out not just because of the record amount but he’s an attacking midfielder which is something that have an abundance of! Quality left backs are the rarest commodity on the football market -

TB made it plain that he would never stand in the way of a player moving on, for the right money.
The transfer request shouldn't trigger a huge discount for the Sportswashers.

There is a World Cup in a few months' time, and Cucurella is surely on the fringes of consideration for Spain's squad.
This will be (one of a number of) a reason for him wanting the move to City, but equally a huge motivation to keep giving of his best, should the move NOT go through.
