If we do cash in on Cucurella, we need to sign a new left back/wing back. The difference that Cucurella made was obvious. It's all very well and good having squad players to fill in when we have injuries or a loss of form, but we need to have a top class specialist if we want to maintain last season's performance. Downgrading our left back/wing back option isn't going to help us progress.

Totally agree, we would need a specialist replacement, just like we needed a specialist for several years before we signed Cucurella.

People seem to interpret that idea as bashing other players who have "filled in" there, but its not. I think we just have to recognise that the season we finally got a specialist left wing back, we had our best season. To me having someone "fill in" for a whole season would be a backward step.

I really don't think so. How do you think it comes across the player? "oh we really need you and want you and will tipple your wages etc and you are our top target, Pep loves you. But yeah sorry we only mean that if we can get you for a knock-down sale price"

I don’t think players pay much attention. It’s all negotiation tactics. We did exactly the same when buying him from Getafe before stumping up the price they wanted - didn’t make much difference to him signing here.

I really don't get the Solly March bashing around here. I take it that it is some kind of "over my head" humor on this site? He is one of our best players!

I'm one of his biggest fans, but even I think "one of our best players" is a stretch.

He is a good premier league squad player.
Absolutely ideal for our budget.
His versatility ensures he gets plenty of game time and he never lets us down.

He doesn't set the world alight, but if we had a squad of 25 world beaters, we wouldn't be Brighton and Hove Albion.

I don't understand why so many of our fans think he is not up to the job.
He clearly is and every manager he has played for, has confirmed the same.

This is exactly right. Solly playing LWB would be a downgrade on Cucu playing there. But he’s still decent. Just not as good as the player one of the biggest sides in Europe want to sign. That’s not a sleight on Solly, just a fact.

Comparable with Trossard per 90 last season.

Trossard any good?

What are you talking about? Trossard was our joint top scorer last season and a regular in the number 1 ranked national team.

Solly wasn't.

But what is his position?

Potter has done a decent job of turning him into a bits and pieces utility player but he’s not a better RWB than Lamptey, he’s not better on the left of defence than Cucerella, he’s not a better 10 than Gross or wide attacker than Trossard. He fills gaps brilliantly but don’t let us go into a Premier League season with him starting at LWB, please.

Good point. He is a utility player, good ball retention and a fair defender (though not good enough to be a first choice)

His USP for our midfield is he is a left footer, the only one we have (ignoring Lallana who's ambidextrous).
As the only one out of 13 he does offer something a bit different.

No one said he was.
Just challenging your view that his Xa stats mean he isn't a good player.

My reference to xA was in answer to a question re post #4403.

Solly March is not the replacement player we need for Cucurella. Why is this even being discussed?

I know.

I'm sure you have now seen Solly created more chances per 90 than Trossard with a comparable xA per 90.
So in answer to your challenge on what his Chances created were: Comparable to Trossard's, is the answer.

Didn't think it was that hard to understand, tbh.

Pre- Season, nothing tangible to discuss.
Falling back on the same old disagreements, whilst we wait for developments.

Are you new here?

Who would you rather see on the team sheet as an attacking player? I have no idea what the stats are but I’d rather see Leandro starting a game as an attacking player over Solly every day and twice on a Sunday

Now you're getting it!

Completely miss the point of the post and then post something that entrenches each other's position further.

Solly was excellent in the LWB role two seasons ago until he got injured. While Cucurella is better, I really struggle to see why March wouldnt be a capable replacement. If you look at most metrics from 2020/21 and from 2021/22, March beats Cucurella in the majority of them. The best English LWB IMO and if Cucurella moves and March starts in the position, he'll be in the talks for a call-up to the World Cup.
