Quite a bit of anger on the City forum……….at their own club. At least a few a) worried about not having any LBs at all and b) lowballing us.

The one thing that annoys me about the reporting of this all summer is the 'City are willing to walk away from the deal if Brighton don't lower their asking price' line.

We're not a market stall hawking our wares for sale where haggling is expected. They want to buy our player who we don't want or need to sell. There is no 'deal' until they offer us something that we can't refuse(whatever that may be).
Spot on.

There is a price not a negotiation here.

I was thinking this. We could go for a loan to give us a year to find the player we actually want or let a young player get to the point where they could realistically start for us. Though I stress I don't like it. We've never categorically ruled out bringing a player in on loan and I concede that there is some logic.

It gets me to something I've always felt was a bit odd about our academy. There really don't seem to be many wide players getting close to the team or going on decent loans. A bewildering array of centre backs, a gamut of central midfielder, the odd playmaker, even a few strikers these days ... but left backs, right backs, wingers, wing backs? We don't produce in anywhere near the same numbers.

I make this point, because if we had young players who were realistically competing for Cucu's spot then a loan would surely be out of the question as it is inhibiting the pathway. As we don't, the possibility comes into play.

When did we last loan a player?

What I find fun (but not surprising), is the amount of fans of top clubs that don't understand how transfers work. Sure, there's arrogance at play: "We're X, so they have to sell for A, B, C reason", but the sheer volume of people that don't understand that "market value" and "value to the selling club" are two completely different things.

To say "Cucurella isn't worth £50m" whilst also claiming with no hint of irony that "Ake is worth £50m" is case in point. City value him at £50m, so if they value him at that why sell him for less and, if they won't, why should we?

Still fully expect City to pay the £50m+.

The downplaying by them is to be expected. It's not like they are going to tell reporters "Yeah we would pay the £50m but we going to offer £30m first".

This inference in the media that ‘little old Brighton’ might miss out on this deal if they don’t drop their valuation is still horrific. Plenty of press going with the the line ‘they only paid £15m last year etc……’, the implication being, how dare we ask for more than double that!

As I suspected, City probably enquired about Cucu weeks ago by asking the price. They’ve taken this long to hatch up their pathetic £30m bid and media campaign. What a bunch of entitled idiots. The sooner they sign this Croatian LB from Germany, the better.

Aaron Mooy.

Thanks. Some time ago then. I can’t see us doing that again anytime soon.

Edit: Wasn’t that a loan to buy option? If so, who was the last player we actually loaned?

Good old Andy

Another agent using our good name to whore around his player?!

As I keep saying, Naylor, Owen and Alex Crook at talkSPORT (who had the Bassey story) all take the trouble to check stories out. Others don't because either they don't know how, can't be bothered, or are afraid that their ITK tales will be shot down.

Personal terms almost agreed again :moo:

I suppose if he guesses often enough he’ll get something right eventually

Guesses... yeah.

Different tone here today - funny that people actually believe Naylor has more insight than Romano.

Someone recently said it was a loan to buy, but I don't think it was described as such at the time. And when we did buy him I don't recall it being reported that we had exercised an option. But I could very well be misremembering.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Didn’t he say the same thing a month ago?

Romano has no insight

So he just made a wild guess yesterday that a) City would make a bid and b) it would be far from Brightons valuation. "Just guesswork, a clickbait chancer"

Then some 24h later Andy Naylor says City just made a bid far from Brightons demands and he is considered some oracle with a hotline number to Paul Barber.

IIRC we loaned Mooy, pure and simple. He then had an outstanding game against Bournemouth in December 2019 and we made a permanent offer (that wasn't tied to the original loan) in the January window.

He was then either shit or paired up with Gross in the Premier League Midfield answer to walking football and ****ed off to China for loads of money.

Izzy Brown was the last loan that didn't become a permanent player that I can recall. Tin Kruhl may have been loan as well at least to begin with..

Romano will place educated guesses and probably has the ear of several agents who want to be able to up the price and wage of their player.

Naylor will certainly have direct comms with Paul Barber and the media team at Brighton. He wouldn't be able to fill his Athletic column without it. What that column contains as a result, is for the Athletic reader to decide.

Brighton never, ever, ever, ever leak anything on transfers to anyone. Romano won't be getting a thing from us.

Wild guess no. Ballpark guess, yes.
