My cynical theory, sadly, is that within a couple of years, the majority of folk in the UK and elsewhere will go back to their consumption, non-recycling and polluting worst. The “you only live once” selfish attitude.

But a sizeable, intelligent and caring minority, will heed some lessons.

I’d love to be wrong in that apportionment.

That in itself would be something

A wake up call to all humans and not before time, we DO NOT own this planet.

We SHOULD NOT consider all the animal kingdom as OUR commodities to be used, abused, sold and murdered.

The natural resources are not ours to rape and pillage as we see fit.

We are just 1 species of millions, well not that many as we have made 70% of them extinct in the last 100 years since the last pandemic and it is true to say an enemy so small nobody can even see is bringing the Human Race to it's knees.

This is a lesson. I truly believe this

When this is all over we can only hope Humanity takes a long hard look at itself in the mirror and the appalling way it has behaved for far too long and makes HUGE changes in the way it acts and interacts in this world in the future and becomes a more benevolent and kind species with serious thought as to it's actions and it's consequences for ALL that live on it

It would have been worth it all then

Human nature, as shown by the queues outside supermarkets and the Australians at the beach shows that far too many don't give a f£ck about the planet and a bigger majority are more concerned about getting by.

Also think there are good things which could come out of this around the importance if community and going against the Thatcherite founded attitude to selfishness and greed.

Selfishness and greed have indeed been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. And they've been criticised and condemned. Never before the Thatcher years have they been considered virtues. "There's no such thing as society" - remember............

Not that I am religious but the Bible and other Holy Books did warn that a metaphorical " Plague of Locus " would sweep across and destroy everything in it's path.

I don't really subscribe to it but you will get all the " Bible Bashers " claiming that this is " God's Wrath " being thrust upon us . All the while as they feel a self entitled elitest view that they are " God's Own Children " and that God spoke to them and told them to panick buy at the supermarket in order to survive this. A modern day Noah's Ark if you will.

Well it's a forum, and I was registering my distaste at more sanctimonious self-righteous drivel dressed up as a rallying call from someone I know is barely capable of tying his own shoelaces without shouting loudly at how he has it so much harder than everyone else.

Based on how many Muppets think Johnson is a decent politician/pm, she's probably many people's favourite still

Well, yes. But when this event is over I suspect that a lot of people will be so desperate to get back to how things were that it will be difficult to get real change in behaviour.

Now, the rising sea levels might do something over the next 20 to 30 years or so.

Well, over the next 20 to 30 years, all these schoolkids marching to demand action on climate change will BE the adults in the room, so I guess we'll find out then if they were serious or if they just fancied bunking off double maths

I'd like governments to take this as an opportunity to rebalance the economy on any return to normality. Money has never been cheaper to borrow and there could be hundreds of thousands of people in need of new employment. This would be an ideal time to introduce a meaningful environmental programme, investing in R&D, retraining and rewilding. The Green New Deal doesn't appear nearly so fanciful given the amount being spent just to keep the existing economic model in cold storage.

That's what I'd like governments to do. They won't, of course. Sigh!

You say that, but at the moment a new economic model is being bolted together to stave economic meltdown on a social, individual and national level. Aside from environmental issues, the distribution of wealth, i.e national living wage for all, is not so fanciful now, and could be more than just a short-term fix as we look ahead.

The lesson is that we haven't invested enough in R&D and taken these things seriously enough for a long time as Bill Gates has repeatedly said.
