Manchester gets Super Casino

To be honest, Manchester is a Labour strong hold, always has been. Labour don't want to lose voters, so they want to minimize the damage by putting it in a location the can afford to lose a handful of votes.

Surprised? New Liebour are desperately trying to keep/build their voting base for the next election, which is why they are moving Defence Training to marginal seats, why they are relocating (forcibly) many of their governmental departments to all points north of Watford, and why they are reinvesting "oop north". Why else would you stick a casino in the crime capital of the UK?

Another coincidence that the Glazer family have links to casinos in the US, and stated that their intention on taking over Man Utd was to run the first super-casino in the UK.....honorary Knighthood, anyone?

And it's in such a lovely area. Sandwiched between Longsight and Ardwick. just right for all the punters to be robbed at gunpoint on their way too and from the place.

Shit hole of the highest order that area.

I think the idea is regeneration, thus removing issues around Longsight and Ardwick. I can't imagine those visiting the casino will be wandering through these areas to and from the venue. Transport links will improve, and I am sure security will be high on the agenda for the venue.

Can't believe it isn't Blackpool, the local news up here seemd certain it would go there.

Lucky escape for Blackpool. There is far too much gambling and it is as destructive as alchol or drug abuse. I wouldn't call this regeneration rather degradation. I hope it all goes horribly wrong.

Maybe they're trying to follow the Aussie model. Every Services Club there has row upon row of one-armed bandits (pokeys). And most of the bigger pubs so far as I can see have built-in bookies. So you can buy a pint of VB and get a bet on the 6.41 from Tassie in the same transaction. There's a few token government leaflets with gambling hotline numbers on and the like, but it's lip-service really.

Truly, Australia is the best country in the world for the drinking and gambling man

Agreed. It does get on my tits when people persistently accuse our politicians of corruption when this country has some of the least corrupt politicians in the world.

Jeremy Paxman's book is an eyeopener - he has nothing but respect for them (across the entire mainstream political landscape) suggesting that they are mostly people of their word and reasonably honest.

this whole thing is a classic example of why we shouldn't give people what they want.

democracy simply doesn't work.

Conspiracy theories are always for morons (in this case Tory morons, if that isn't tautology) and this is no exception. As has been said, if Labour was looking to be self-serving in this, surely the obvious thing would be to use the Dome in which it, erm, invested so much faith and money. But it hasn't. But it's still all a "conspiracy", of course.

Good nightlife with relatively little trouble, great music, global cuisine, Bridgewater Hall, The Lowry, Imperial War Museum......Manchester has a lot to offer both young and old.

Sounds like fun. About the closest I'll get to the real Las Vegas. You wont know where you really are once the doors close behind you so it doesnt really matter WHERE they put it!
Looking forward to getting gamblers bladder and time loss and falling off my fruit machine high-chair! lol!

Brighton and Hove

About Brighton

239. Brighton, with its contiguous “other half” Hove, lies on the south coast of England
between the South Downs and the sea. Brighton began as a seaside – and gambling –
resort in the early nineteenth century under the patronage of the Prince Regent and
grew rapidly with its fast rail connection to London. Although to some extent the resort
has suffered from the problems of all cold water resorts, today the city is stated to
receive a little over 8 million visitors a year of which 6.5 million are day visitors.234 There
are currently approximately 6,000 hotel bedrooms and a further 800 are planned or
under development.235 The city has a five star hotel,236 and is a large regional shopping
centre.
237
For all of its apparent prosperity the City of Brighton and Hove is the 74th most deprived
local authority area in England,238 lying in the third lowest 10 percentile band of multiple
indices of deprivation.239 There is some evidence of deprivation in the city with income
deprivation a particular factor240 The proportion of economically active in the population
of working age in the period April 2005 – March 2006 was 79.6%, of whom 74.3%
were in employment. Unemployment stood at 3.0% in October 2006 against a national
average of 2.5%.241
241. The city’s people face challenges around skills, economic activity rates (see preceding
paragraph) and, with GVA per capita below national and regional averages, long-term
economic sustainability.242
The proposal
242. The proposal is for a large and/or a small casino. The Tourism Strategy for the city calls
for carefully controlled, top quality casino development to support broader product
development ambitions.243
Consultations and regional considerations
243. The South-East Plan specifically refers to Brighton and Hove as being within an area
where particular focus is needed on economic and social regeneration.244 Other policies
of the (currently) draft RSS for the South East aim to reduce regional and inter-regional
economic disparities, diversify the economic base of coastal resorts and stimulate leisure
development in town centres.245
Consideration
244. As a successful, popular and well established seaside resort, Brighton could obviously be
a good place in which to test the impact of a casino.
245. The city council is quite sensibly addressing its “broader product development
ambitions” to the end that its tourism economy is to remain strong. In this respect a
casino development would have synergy with the existing significant conference activity,
other well developed leisure activities and its seemingly thriving retailing economy.
Proximity to Gatwick Airport and London246 would of course help the success of a casino
in the city.

246. While the city undoubtedly has serious regeneration needs, comparative data suggests
that they do not appear to be so acute as in other seaside resorts.
247. The city council was slow to confirm its willingness to license,247 but did so.248
248. While either a large casino or a small one, or both, would have a beneficial effect in
sustaining the city’s tourism enterprise, we do not rank this proposal as highly as other
areas with greater regeneration needs.
