"He wasn’t playing at anywhere near the level he should be. Timo's first-half performance was not acceptable to me. I told Timo that he's a German international, that I need everyone to be trying to give their best and this wasn’t an acceptable example. I expect a lot more from the senior guys."

Can you recall an Albion manager singling a player out like this?

Should Albion managers do this?

I think I prefer this stuff to be handled out of the public eye.

The last resort I reckon. Werner has never really produced the goods and Postecoglou's at the end of his tether. A final bid to get him to up his game.

Probably not the best strategy long term though. If the next step is to get rid of a player, openly talking them down can only make it more difficult to get a good deal when they move on.

He's only on loan

RDZ on Baleba, maybe? I think he had a 'pop' at someone else, although maybe it wasn't as blatant...

Werner is very quick and, er, that's it. Astonishing that he's an international.

But, no, I don't agree with Ange calling him out. Keep that stuff internal and take some responsibility yourself. You picked and trained him.

Fans aren’t blind we watch the same game the coach does.
Coaches should stop sugar coating these overpaid privileged pros if they aren’t busting a gut for the shirt.
If anyone thought the Albion busted a gut last Sunday they are deluded. Disgraceful performance.

I remember Alan Cork calling Dave Cameron (not that one) "useless" in a post match interview

I like it.

With respect, that is complete nonsense. I thought we were excellent on Sunday, and made one individual error that cost us the win. You can't seriously suggest that you think the players didn't TRY hard enough?

I don't think it's helpful for a player or for a team culture - though I think it's good when a player comes out and says that they weren't good enough (as I believe Dunk has, and Webster).

Mourinho is often great at distracting attention away from poor player performances and that must build a good siege mentality for example. Conversely, the first press conference where he stops blaming everyone except his players and starts suggesting it's them at fault, "mentally weak" seeming to be his favourite attack used to describe his teams at Spurs, Chelsea, Man United and Roma, always feels to me like a sign he is on his way to another big sacking payday (£89m earned so far from sackings).
