It's a bit of a myth IMO. There will have been a bump in sales but it will mainly be fewer buying (say) Rashford/Greenwood/Fernandes and more with Ronaldo on the back.
Also United are only on a 7% commission from adidas.
There is certainly an increase in merch revenue, but to put it all down to the man who paid a woman $300,000 after having sexual intercourse with her is a bit of a leap of faith, as in 2020 merchandise sales were hit by matches taking place behind closed doors.
