1. I don't believe, like some, that we would be top of league if Poyet was still here, not with our injuries, especially with Poyet's no 1 favourite Bridcutt out for half the season.

Very true. I think if Brighton under Poyet had to cope with the injuries Oscar has, Gus would have been in melt-down.

Oscar has just got on with it which is very much to his credit.

Well he's already taken an awful di canio side to a wembley final, beating Chelsea and Man U on the way.

Added to the fact he took over after 1 point from 27, and are going to be mid table come end of February.

They were a good side but terrible under Di Canio. Anyone who took over there was going to look good.

Thanks, although 22,000 posts in eight years is perhaps not a rate I need to increase!

Gus is such a strange beast. Even now I find myself hating him and then loving him all in the same evening. I think it's just the combination of being a very good manager but an, at times, unsavoury man who perhaps liked the sound of his own voice on one or two more occasions than was really necessary.

Pretty much sums it up.

I think it just shows that Gus is a great manager, his target Van Diyke who we just missed out on FFP ? is having great reviews at Celtic. Now worth 10 million if anyone wants him. Oscar Carcia is doing a great job in following the great man with injuries ect. I dont think anyone should criticise him for losing 1-0 to 4th place Derby, as some people do on this site.

This is why I'd wish you'd post more frequently. Your analysis of football in general (and Albion in particular) is always a top quality read.

Under Poyet Sunderland have beaten Man United twice, Man City, Chelsea, Everton, Spurs, Newcastle United and Southampton, won 9 and lost 5 from a team with 1 win and 7 defeats before he started. A coincidence or have we lost the best manager the club have had in 30 years ? Answers welcome.

Best manager without a doubt but don't think they beat spurs.

Guy is an idiot though but you can see how quickly they are improving. Will be a top 6 club in two years time.

I'm just so thrilled about how the astonishing amount of plastic Mancs in our county will be feeling tonight!!! They can't change their allegiance to City so i wonder where they'll turn. Brilliant result tonight but a disaster for the second best supported side in Sussex.

Probably of all time. We all knew from the start that Gus had the attitude, ability and footballing nous to manage at the highest level. Anyone who denies it now, is simply in denial. Sunderland fans are lucky to have him - just as we were.

Hmm maybe but you seem to be ignoring what he did to the club/players/fans at the end though.

We may have been lucky to have him but we are all suffering from the fall-out now.

I've had a few mind changes when it comes to Gus but you Can't argue with results, I pretty much agree with what TCB said towards the top of the previous page, let's not kid ourselves he took us from nobodies fooling around at the bottom of league one to a very competitive championship club, and I for one will always look upon Poyet in a fond way, even if things ended sourly under bizzare circumstances & the fact he was an outspoken idiot at times, you can't argue with what he did for this club.

If we ever meet them I would give him a good reception.
