Considering the worlds in recession, football really is on a whole different planet isn't it? Surely even IF they won the Champions League they won't see return on this investment. Great bit of business from Man Utd.

Merchandising will see them recoup an enormous amount. Didn't they recoup (admittedly the much smaller but still hefty) transfer fee for Beckham in shirt sales world wide in a month or so?

For the last 4 years of Perez's previous reign as President, at the height of the Galactico era, the Madrid trophy cabinet was (amusingly) as bare as Old Mother Hubbard's cupboard. He and the Galacticos then sodded off and Madrid won the league twice in a row.

Los Galacticos didn't work last time because they had two many ego players who couldn't play as a team (which clearly doesn't sound like Ronaldo at all), and so they got beaten by clubs whose players could work together (*cough*Barcelona*cough*), and now it's going to be like deja vu all over again.
