Don't usually like to laugh at people's demise, but you just can't make this stuff up!

Man killed by armed bird at California cockfight, was stabbed by rooster with attached knife

.DELANO, Calif. - A man who was at an illegal cockfight in central California died after being stabbed in the leg by a bird that had a knife attached to its own limb, officials confirmed Monday.

Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, of Lamont, California, was declared dead at a hospital about two hours after he was injured in neighbouring Tulare County on Jan. 30, the Kern County coroner said.

An autopsy concluded Ochoa died of an accidental "sharp force injury" to his right calf.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said it was unclear if a delay in seeking medical attention contributed to Ochoa's death.

"I have never seen this type of incident," Sgt. Martin King, a 24-year veteran of the sheriff's department, told the Bakersfield Californian

How the hell do you die after being stabbed in the leg?

Amazingly - there is also blood in the leg as well as the rest of the body!

But actually there's a major artery that goes down the leg. The guy got perhaps a bit unlucky (aka the chicken got lucky), but he was probably surrounded by dumbass redneck types who would know fuckall about first aid.

Astoundingly nowadays in this country, first aid does NOT advise a tourniquet for such wounds. Despite that, I would apply one if faced with such a wound, as well as raising the leg above heart level, covering the body to maintain warmth/combat shock, and keeping the wound as 'closed' as possible until a patient reaches hospital.

Text book technique now says for a "spurter" [main vessel rupture], keep pressure applied and adding layers to the wound - laying flat and raising the wound above the heart will help lower blood pressure and flow to the leaking area. If you losing blood too quick, only chance of survival is to get a line in before veins colapse. This may have been what done for the fella in the end ...

IE Wanted to hang about until the end of the fight to see if he won - makes no odds now does it?

Hmm. Anyone else look at the thread title ("Man killed by armed bird in cock fight") and think this was going to be about some weird type of slasher porn?

Yes, yes I did. Still a cracking story though.

My fave headline remains as "Wrestling midgets killed by fake hookers" http://www.metro.co.uk/news/696603-wrestling-midgets-killed-by-fake-hookers

and it was accompanied with this stirring photo of a fellow midget wrestler paying his respects at the coffin

Having said that, as the chicken wasn't cooked he may well have died from salmonella!!!!!!
