Gordon Smith scored a goal at Wembley.

Paul Kitson is the worst. Beats Richard Tiltman.

Gordon Smith our worst? Someone's having a laugh.

He was a class player, forever remembered for one lapse.

Albion manager Mark McGhee today challenged Maheta Molango to toughen up.

The Swiss-born striker is back in the squad for Saturdays trip to Crewe after six weeks in the wilderness.

Molango is likely to be on the bench at Gresty Road as cover with Chris McPhee ruled out by a foot injury.

McGhee wants the 22-year-old, on target after only 12 seconds in Albions opening day defeat at Reading, to become more hardened to the rough and tumble of English football.

Chriss injury opens the door again for Maheta, there is absolutely no doubt about that, McGhee said. He is the next in line.

He has showed some brilliance and he can also be very frustrating. We have to continue to work hard with him and he must toughen up.

Even in training he gets bumped and knocked over, sometimes marginal fouls which you dont get, but he stops and is surprised. We have got to knock that out of him.

McGhee is confident that Molango, signed on a three-year contract after spells in Germany and Spain, will prove himself once he adapts to the English game.

We are not disappointed that we have signed Maheta, McGhee said. We still think he has got a lot to offer and he will come to terms with it eventually.

The likes of Ward, Lawrenson, Horton, Zamora etc mean that Gordon Smith probably wouldn't make anyone's all-time list of top 5 (or even 10) favorite Albion players. However over the course of our history he's easily in the top 25. No, I haven't seen them all (I'm not THAT old!) but Smith played most of his football for us in the top division and never looked out of place - remember his hat-trick against Coventry? He wasn't some loveable lower-division journeyman but a class act. To say he's our 'worst ever player' is likie saying Mickey Adams was our 'worst ever manager'.

Gordon Smith was quality... my vote would go to Tiltman... I seem to recall that idiot Barry Lloyd saying Tiltman was better than Dean Saunders... what a prize tw@t!...

... also, glad to see Maheta knocking on the door again... think he has great potential... but needs to work on first touch, heading, as well as "getting tough"...

Has Jeff Stelling already finished that book? If not he needs to be told, I'm sure he himself wouldn't want to the look a complete fool, which is precisely what he will look if he makes Smith our worst ever player.

Gordon Smith was great!!!! Him and Robinson were magic to watch. He may have missed "that goal" but at least he was in the right position to take the pass. In the replay Foster was never in the game, but nobody suggests him do they? (Foster too was great to watch)

Kitson has to be the worst - on so many different levels

Isn't Gordon Smith the only player to play in both the English and the Scottish Cup Finals in the same year? (He got transferred immediately after the 83 Cup Final???)

???

Gordon Smith was a top player. The goal he scored in the FA cup was pure class. He was also a top bloke always willing to speak the fans. He even joined in a kick around i was having with a few friends in Hove Rec.

I still blame Michael (spanish des) Robinson for the chance that Smith missed. He should have just nailed it instead of passing it.

I would say there have been plenty of worse players
