Its Palace week, and when thinking about all things '6 finger Croydon massive' Big Mal is always prominent in my thoughts, if only for sheer entertainment value, search You Tube, there are some classics on there, a fair few big fat cigars. (His spat with Mullers on the Big Match from 1970 is worth a look alone)

Lauded by many as the greatest technical coach this country ever produced.

Had he been around today would he have actually been more sucessful?

Would technically the top players of today suited his coaching skills?

The received wisdom is that he did well at Citeh because the more experienced Joe Mercer was around to curb his excesses. And you have to conclude that his subsequent career backs that view up. Left to his own devices, he didn't achieve that much. Apart from getting Palace relegated twice, of course.

What makes me smile to myself, is that many on here will deride him, and loathe him, for the simple fact that he was once manager of Crystal Palace. Whilst admitting that l didn't care very much for him as a person, that doesn't mean he wasn't very good at his job, as his record proves.

There have been many football managers that l haven't liked as people, Sir Alex and Jose Mourinho are two more, but that doesn't mean l don't respect them for brilliant at what they do.

Fat Cigar, Fedora Hat, Fiona Richmond, various other totty jobs, he was absolutely ripe for the piss to be taken in a gigantic way. And so it was, in February 1976 when we played Palace at the Goldstone, winning 2-0. Mike Bamber and the rest of the directors all wore Fedora hats as an “up yours” gesture. The result also helped. Marvellous!!

A friend of mine ran a pub in Elmers End near Beckenham that MA frequented very often and my friend told me that he had a terrific aura about him and whenever he walked into the pub people would stand up and just look.

If he was RUBBISH as you put it, he wouldn't have had the career that he diid. Was very successful under Joe Mercer at Manchester City, and without his influence they may not have had the success that they deserved.

Well some people are just better at being a number two. That doesn't mean they are no good at what they do, or that they are RUBBISH as an earlier poster put it. If he really was 'useless' no club would ever have employed him.

What put a lot of people off Malcolm Allison, were his excesses and the way he behaved outside the game.

I was in a pub once when he came in. All of them ordered food and he was the only one in the group to finish as they were huge portions.

Yes he did live in Yarm and died there.
And he did have an aura about him, as soon as he walked in you knew who he was.
I went to the bar and he started the conversation with me and it went on for some time while he was throwing wine by the bottle down his throat.
When I told him I supported Brighton his response was arrrghh.
But, I'm afraid, he was very very drunk.
