It astonishes me sky still charge for HD like it is something new and unique then they expect you to pay again for Sky Q. Been taking the piss for years seems people have had enough and are switching off

Is that the current price? I've not looked too closely at how much Sky Sports costs for ages as I've had no time to watch it and normally can find a stream of any sporting event I want to watch.

That covers sky sports 1-5 and sky sports news, f1 and mix as far as I can tell. Not sure what channels it will cover when this relaunch happens, I'm inclined to wait for the relaunch though and see how flexible they are on you being able to pick and choose only the sports channels that are of interest. Had the football season been on I'd have more than likely signed up now and cancelled after the 3 months for £10 a month as it's cheaper than trying to get a now Tv pass and would be in Hd too.

Check previous threads - if you threaten to quit / quit they will eventually offer you the lot for £20-£25 per month. Often that's just a 12 month deal and you then have to go through it again, which is a pain. Some on here have secured permanent deals though.

Quitting is much easier if you just have TV with them, if you have TV broadband and phone it's a bit more of a hassle but you could probably get by with your mobile for a few days before they start calling you with the £20ish offer. Or just switch your phone and broadband to another provider and then take up the TV only deal.

Netflix and co have a better model as they charge a fixed reasonably low rate and you don't have to threaten to quit / quit every 12 months to get a decent price. And you don't have to sit through adverts.

Kodi is free but better for movies and shows rather than live sports, so I understand.

Trouble is we now have a half and half situation. Albion games are going to be split between BT and Sky next year. Cricket on BT, Rugby on BT except the lions which is on Sky. F1 on sky which after races like Sunday I realise why I still watch. All the golf is also on Sky. I don't want to pay for both but BT and Sky are much of a muchness now and that's never been the case before. Sky has always been better than the competition.

All competition has done though is increase subscription prices for your average punter and doubled your run of the mill Premier league players salary. Sky pay 11 million per PL match. 11 million. Let the sink in when you watch Burnley v Stoke.

I cancelled sky last year but they convinced me to come back, I get all Sky+, usual TV channels, boxsets, movies (inc HD) and Sports (not HD) for £18.50 a month. When the deal ends I shall cancel unless they can at least (or almost) match it again.

Well I overheard a bloke in Aldi saying he watched all of the PL football for free in nigh on HD over the internet. Was going to ask him for more info but I got into a row about vouchers at the till and the chance was lost.

Back OT:

Currently with BT but moving house and will go with the cheapest most comprehensive package.

Since joining BT they've hoiked their prices each time they've added some other spurious "great content" and want people to physically commit to a new 12 or 18 month deal (I get the annuity income model) but to my mind they need to get with the program of other streaming services and allow month to month flexibility if they want me.

I've always had Sky because I like lots of sport. Football, Rugby, Horse Racing, Golf, Darts or Cricket will always get an airing in my house and I'll essentially watch anything I can bet on. Except Tennis. Although I might even get into that given the lack of sport this summer.

Where Sky have cocked up is that they have put all their eggs in the PL basket. There are a number of people like me who watch sport and have Sky because of it. I'd much rather watch Ashes cricket, European rugby or even the 3.45 from Yarmouth than a crappy PL game between 2 Northern hoofball teams. Sky have spent so much money on average football they can't afford anything else and BT are hovering up the best of the rest. It won't be long before I switch.

Yes, that's the normal charges. But for £12 more you can get a second box that is meant to go in the bedroom. This box mirrors everything available on the first. I wonder how many have this second box in their childrens house or even overseas.

IPTV is just another delivery mechanism. The fundamentals of content production/distribution and payment (for creators/distributors) still apply.

Do you accept that there has to be some payment model, somewhere in the system, to keep the whole thing going? Or do you belong to a group/generation that (just) refuse to pay for anything because it's available (almost certainly illegally/encryption busted) for free somewhere in the Ether?

I'm not having a dig at you by the way. In a previous life I've worked for Sky and I also create and and distribute IP (over all delivery platforms).

Here's a question for you; if big aggregators of content and channels like Sky operated micro-payment systems for subscription/pay-per-view - would you pay then? In this example micro-payments means low pounds (less than a tenner?).
