The Newhaven incident looks like a simple case of illegal people smuggling, presumably from France if they were in the container for just a few hours. It's quite an industry, and I don’t have much patience with it.

Yes it is but that shouldn’t be mutually exclusive to your first point I quoted - we don’t know anything about the 6 people seeking asylum (they don’t get refugee status until they are ’processed’ btw.) - no one can assume at this stage whether they are in fear of their lives in their country of origin and needing assistance (well obviously they need some assistance as they arrived in a locked freezer then taken to hospital but I mean needing refugee status) - which takes time for the authorities to determine.

My only caveat there is that many who arrive illegally are those who can afford to pay smugglers and bribe their way across very long distances. So it's often people who can most afford it rather than those who need it most

Again, no one arrives ‘illegally’ if they are seeking asylum. The 6 hiding in the freezer were not ‘illegal’ because they arrived without papers and didn’t go through border control - ie one can presume they will all be seeking asylum - those crossing the channel in boats and lorries have paid smugglers (who are the criminals in this scenario), often what amounts to their entire life savings to seek asylum in the UK. I think it would be presumptuous to assume they had the money to pay so are less needy of asylum than others. We don’t know anything about them at this stage. But yes, there are millions of displaced people in war torn Countries/or where civil war has made them targets, who do not have the means to pay people-smugglers. It is even more criminal when you realise how little the smugglers do to ensure their physical safety. We need to open up some safe routes as a matter of priority IMO.

But just to reiterate, those arriving in the UK seeking asylum are a very small minority in comparison to the total net immigration. In fact the annual figure is just under the maximum capacity of Old Trafford.

After a quick google I see one person has been charged after two were arrested ….no update on those taken to hospital…but on a positive note they’ve confirmed no one has died. Facts as I understand them unless anyone has anything to counter that.

It is matter of interpretation. Mine differs from yours. For instance, the gravamen of Godwin's law is a comparison of Nazis and Hitler, the cause of the Holocaust. The comparison by @The Clamp referenced Jewish refugees (a manifestation of the Holocaust) and WW2 (the war in which it occurred). Sure they are linked, but do you see that they are not the same thing? At the risk of repeating myself, it was you who used the terms Nazis and Hitler, and nobody else. You then used Godwin's Law against @The Clamp. You tried to mock him.

But nobody joined you in your 'laughter' on post #205.

All this on a thread about six desperate individuals who risked their lives, confined in a small space, damaged the motor to save their lives, gassed themselves, and are now hospitalised. They could have died.

The weird thing is, I've read that locals pronounce it Darren, but none of the people I've met from there actually do.
This annoys me far more than it should do.
