Grim news from Australia and especially NSW where lockdown is expected to continue until well into November and more troops are being called in to enforce the lockdown.

Are bullets going to stop it?

Who knows, but fines have increased to a minimum of 5,000 Australian dollars for anyone caught 5km away from their home without a valid reason. The Australians are certainly doing all they can to keep deaths and suffering from this awful virus to a minimum.

Not really. They have made a bad mess by not vaccinating the population quickly enough and now are suffering as a result. Zero Covid is totally untenable.

Will be interesting to see how that evolves.

In the choice between freedom and safety, humanity has over and over shown its preference for the latter. It will be interesting to see how far you can push that.

You can argue about the details and timings of restrictions being lifted but broadly speaking I think the policy of a holding operation until we could get the vaccine out was basically correct.

Unfortunately the Aussies have a 215% vaccination rate amongst the 16+ and won't hit 80% of the population until November (source).

That really is dropping the ball.

Their 16+ fully vax'd rate is 26.1%, they are about 3 months behind us.

Their current measures in NSW are pretty similar to what we encountered from boxing day till Easter but with tougher enforcement, its looks like they won't be eased till mid-November

But unlike our government Australia does take public health seriously with still only 1000 deaths and nothing like the scaring on the health system we are experiencing, let alone a long covid hangover.

Anyone think we're in be a better place Covid wise than them by Christmas?

The figure updated after I made my post.

When you have been in various states of lockdown for 18 months the 4 months until Christmas is a long time. They secured their borders to keep infections out but didn't back it with a swift vaccination programme and now they have the army on the streets.

A further problem is when do they open the borders up? If they wait for Covid to disappear around the world they might have a long wait.

I saw an interview with I believe the governer(?) of WA and he was struggling to answer that one without implying zero Covid for ever …and that was state borders

Covid won't disappear and they are going to have live with a level of infection. Their strategy is keep numbers low and when they reach 80% of eligible population open up cautiously maintaining contact tracing, masks etc

I think their own cut strategy will be very interesting, when you've been enforcing lockdowns of entire states on the basis of a single case I'm not sure how well their citizens will respond to being told at some point of going back to normal or becoming used to thousands of daily cases (which is fairly inevitable when they relax restrictions) or welcoming international travel ever again.

Another week of huge numbers of excess deaths in the home. 726 excess deaths, 38 were COVID-19.

It will go by mostly ignored. It's a scandal.

His point, rightly or wrongly, is that the overall treatment of the covid pandemic is killing more than covid itself. I don't have an opinion as to whether he is right, but that's surely what he's driving at.
