Thanks, that makes sense now, I’ve seen lots of people likening this virus to both of those and suggesting as it’s the same type of virus, it’s possible it could go the same way, but you’ve both clarified it well, so it’s very unlikely it will.

I think [MENTION=529]sparkie[/MENTION] actually did a better job at explaining it than both of us. There's a long incubation period with CV19, which means that the infected are spreading it when they don't know they've got it. You know when you've got SARs and MERs, and it knocks you out, so this means it doesn't actually spread anywhere near as much. It's this reason why CV19 is such a difficult virus, and fits the description of a pandemic. As their names imply, the other two were restricted to certain regions of the globe, but never went beyond that.

Yes, I've been following this for two or three months, and it's being edging up by one or two a day for well over a month. So, for it to spike up by c50% overnight, suggests that it's a shift in how the total is calculated. It's also worth noting that there is a message on the PHE page which states the following:

The methodology for reporting positive cases changed on 2 July 2020 to remove duplicates within and across pillars 1 and 2, to ensure that a person who tests positive is only counted once. Due to this change, 30,302 previously reported cases were removed from the UK total.

Numbers of lab-confirmed positive cases throughout this website (national, regional and local authority level) now include those identified by testing in all settings (pillars 1 and 2). Due to this change many cases previously not attributed to any area are now included in area totals. This is not a recent surge in cases – the cases now being reported occurred from April onwards.

Yep, I've got personal experience of this. Having had very mild Covid symptoms back in March I've now had a cough since April. I've talked to a Doctor twice. The first time I was recommended to call the surgery first thing the next morning by 111. When I called I could not hear the receptionist because the operator talking on the phone next to her was so loud. I called back, got the loud woman after 20 minutes and she immediately told me to use the online diagnoses tool and hung up. When I did - guess what - it flashed up red and told me to immediately call the surgery. Three calls. I got called back by a doctor who told me "I only had 5 minutes" and proscribed some antibiotics that didn't work, and that I couldn't collect because I was isolating. She also told me to call back if it had not gone in three weeks.

Three weeks after that I went through the same rigmarole with the same result, with the exception I was told to go to the Polyclinic for a chest x-ray. This came back "negative" (they didn't say for what but I'm assuming the Big C) but it took six weeks and two useless courses of antibiotics to get to a first stage check for cancer.

All I want to do is see a Doctor and talk this through and have them listen to my chest, but I can't because I've got a cough! At no stage, though, has ANYONE offered me a test. 111 told me not to bother as any Covid "would have gone ages ago".

The idea that this is down to capacity is ludicrous. It's down to people being excluded from face to face medical care when they have certain symptoms that are not serious enough (yet) for hospital.

Scuse me in the likelihood that I'm being ignorant, but could you not receive a drop-in test if you went to Falmer?

I know people who've had tests they didn't even plan on taking cos they happened to be visiting Rotherham's club shop and went past the test centre there (they've got a similar situation to us where the stadium has been set up as the main testing point.) Think I've read that ours is under capacity?

You're right, I could have had a drop in test at Falmer in June. I was talking to 111 in March and April and it was mid-April when I was told it was "too late". Where there is a reliable and free antibody test I will certainly take that.

I thought I was pretty unique but I recently read an article by Guardian writer Simon Hattinstone who has been through exactly the same thing, more or less.

Sorry to hear that, back in March my wife had symptoms that persisted for a long time she phoned 111 and they then referred her back to the local surgery.

The doctor was so worried he then sent her to the urgent care unit in Milton Keynes, she was checked over and advised that she probably had COVID-19,

she was not tested at the time and because her chest was clear they sent her home.

Her cough lasted over 3 months and at times she couldn't walk, she is now recovering which is good news, at the time I had mild symptoms but no cough spent 6 days in bed completely exhausted.

So in some ways she was lucky to go to hospital and get checked but she hasn't been tested. A doctor shouldn't be telling you that COVID would have gone ages ago when they don't have all the information.

You're right, I could have had a drop in test at Falmer in June. I was talking to 111 in March and April and it was mid-April when I was told it was "too late". Where there is a reliable and free antibody test I will certainly take that.

Surely if you get a test done and it’s negative you can then book an appointment at the doctors knowing currently you don’t have Covid 19?

Yes. Yes we did. That’s exactly what many people thought.

I’d give us outside, three-four weeks before we are back in full lockdown. Or at least should be.

No we wont, the virus is here and here to stay like 100s of other viruses. We as an economy cant close again and we as people cant hide under the duvet for ever. There are far too many people calling for lock downs after every small out break ( enjoying 4 months paid holiday ?)

The figures for deaths how ever sad are very small at the moment ( was it 22 yesterday?) and infections 300 odd. We have to get on with life, if you feel vulnerable or are over 70 you may want to stay at home, but its not for me I done 3 months ill take my chances from now on.

Like you I have worked through this visiting factories in my service roll, what has got me is how normal most are once you get past reception, yes there is signage and arrows on the floor but we have to work and we cant always avoid people.

For me its all a bit weird, I go to work, walk around supermarkets ( I still maintain the worst places for SD ) my life hasn't really changed apart from not seeing my old mum for 12 weeks, although I see her again now. And I cant go and watch Cricket.

(Sadly) I think you're right.

It's fairly easy for those (like my children, those packing out the beaches and soho streets at the weekend) that just want to get on with it and "take their chances" as it is for the elderly/vulnerable that will have to take whatever measures they can or feel comfortable with. It's less easy for those stuck in the middle that are fearful of what might happen but because there's no enforced lockdown, and thus no furlough scheme etc will have some tough choices to make.

And what about NHS staff? They don't get a choice?

But I think the days of wholesale lockdown are gone ... there's not really any practical alternative in the long run

If it gets bad again I truly hope your "chances" don't kill someone you love.

Yeah, Been working all through. I work at women’s refuges and safe houses, they have been busier if anything. But I’m glad I’ve been able to work all through, spending three months at home without being able to socialise? No thanks!

What's absolutely batshit stupid, is that in three pubs over the weekend, you had 3 people who knew they could possibly have Covid yet still said, "sod it" and went a few pints anyway.

It takes 24-48 hours to get your results through, so that means they were either tested on Saturday or Sunday. They would've had to ring 111 prior to that to (at the bare minimum) get an appointment at a drive through centre, so would've needed to do that Friday at the earliest. BEFORE pubs had reopened.
