As for ICU, the source is my mother who says that if you have equipment, staff and space its not very difficult increasing ICU capacity. I think if you google it you'll find "more credible" sources saying it is fairly easy and that the problem is shortage of staff/equipment, but for me I'm just gonna settle with her words, she's been a ICU coordinator for ten years and is not the type of person to whitewash reality.

Well why don't the NHS just get Amazon to deliver a load of equipment if it's that easy!! Bit like saying winning the Prem is easy if you just spend a couple of billion!!!!

Getting the equipment and getting the staff trained on the equipment is not something you do with the flick of a switch. Oh, and my source is my wife who has to run an ICU!!

As at the end of Feb, BSUH had a total of 51 adult critical care beds. BSUH covers the Brighton and Hove area (pop. 290k) and Mid Sussex (pop. 146k). Let's hope they've got Amazon Prime for those next day deliveries!!!

People were debating the number of ICU beds in different countries and by saying that IF you have the equipment and the staff, its easy to increase the numbers. They are not set in stone. If you have 22445214525 billions of ventilators, doctors and nurses, your previous ICU capacity wont matter.

Nowhere did I write that it is easy to get staff and equipment (it wont be). I was merely pointing out that ICU beds is not some type of magical phenomena but something you create with resources, and thats why the present or former number may not mean much in a situation like this.

You failed to understand what I wrote and then put words in my mouth, so I your - by the way supercool - sarcasm is a bit off target since its directed at something you made up in your head.

I think if you google it you'll find "more credible" sources saying it is fairly easy and that the problem is shortage of staff/equipment, but for me I'm just gonna settle with her words'. On one hand you identify there is a shortage of staff/equipment and then immediately state but you believe your mum. The point I was making was that 'your mum' was stating, for want of a better phrase, 'the bleeding obvious'. I never said the number was set in stone but you don't jump from 51 icu beds to thousands at the drop of a hat which, I would suggest, most people reading your first post, may have thought was possible just by getting the ventilators and trained staff in.

And of course the starting point for the number of beds is relevant. If, for example, you identify you need 500 ventilated beds, that easier to achieve if you start with 451 rather than 51!! Sorry, now I'm stating the bleeding obvious.

Didn’t see a lot of social distancing yesterday .

Also , last night - a house Over the back having a party until the early hours .

English will generally do what they want especially where booze is involved .

If a lockdown happens I don’t expect everyone will abide by it and wouldn’t be surprised to see many actually fight it and social disturbances to happen .

Premier League could resume before virus restrictions are lifted – Southampton chief

1 hour ago From the section Football

Martin Semmens
Martin Semmens is Southampton FC's chief executive

Southampton's chief executive has suggested Premier League matches could be on television every day while people are still confined to their homes because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Martin Semmens says the return of the top flight - currently suspended until at least 30 April - would be "a sign that the country is coming back to normal" but it should not happen before it is safe.

"We have to do what is right and safe for the general public," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"When everybody is safe and we're not using up NHS and police resources, the government would like us to get back to playing because we are entertainment and a sign that the country is coming back to normal.

"If people are home for another month and Premier League football is on the TV every day that can only be a good thing. Not because we are more essential than the NHS but because we can give people entertainment and show that we're fighting back."

Semmens said teams are hopeful of completing the league by the end of June but did not yet know when play would resume.

Some players will be out of contract on 30 June, but Semmens believes players could be convinced to stay for longer should play continue beyond that point

"We hope to get the league done by the end of June," Semmens added. "As soon as you go past that date, there are legal challenges.

"If we ended up playing until 15 July and you had to extend a player's contract by two weeks, convincing a player to play two more weeks of football and get paid nicely to do it - I don't believe that will be a substantial challenge.

"The challenge is making sure we don't have a knock-on effect to other seasons and make football compromised for years to come."

Has the Southampton Chairman been taking Stupid pills ?

There is possible a failure to acknowledge the magnitude of the situation. When lives are at stake, no- the priority is not to ensure that next seasons fixtures are not impacted. Why not just accept that it might take a few years for the fixtures to normalise?

E.g. 19/20 completions could possibly be concluded later in the year, no one knows, but say Sept - Dec. Start the 20/21 season in Jan, maybe bin some completions for one season and just try to get the league and a few other competitions done by the end of summer.

Then- the WC is Nov - Dec 22, so run the 21/22 season from say Nov 21 to Sept 22... Crap- don’t know how we get back to a August - May season!

What were they planning for the winter WC anyway?!

I think the EPL clubs should acknowledge that voiding the season is a very real possibility. Instead of trying to prioritise finishing this season at, what seems, all costs, they should impose a cut off date when they accept the season will not be concluded and then concern themselves with whether next season has any chance of starting on time, which, there is a good chance it won't.

This is so obvious, but the PL is deluded - and I don't include bhafc and west ham in this - about this virus catastrophe.

Yep, grasp the nettle. I couldn't give a fig about the football right now. I miss it, it would be wonderful to return to normality, but the powers that be should get perspective here.

Next season starting on time means August. But what if it was much later than that?

Wouldn't it be an option to say it doesn't matter when matches are played again, we can start by finishing this season? There's no reason why this season's games need to be wasted. And what if we started a new season, and that got cancelled part way too?

Same here, there are far more important things going on than debating when football restarts

The reality of all this has finally hit home to a lot of people this weekend. I had to go out to do some shopping yesterday, so therefore had to bob and weave between shops to get what I needed- the only social distancing I saw was a woman in Superdrug who caused confusion in the queue as she was the only one doing it. Some shops limiting the amount of customers, some not. Some people covering their faces, some not. We're not all reading from the same page I'm afraid.

It was the look of shock on people's faces though. Reality has bitten. I saw one-or-two people actually drinking cans of alcohol while doing their shopping - they're not your usual street drinkers either, but it doesn't surprise me in this country - a lot of people are just going lock themselves in and get hammered constantly, so they'll carry on when they have to go out to the shops.

Despite the breeze, as it was such a beautiful day yesterday I had a stroll around Hastings Old Town. All the pubs I've drunk in for years were shut. Shop owners were just sat outside in the sun doing nothing other stare into space. Utterly surreal, utterly bewildering, yet so utterly unimaginable in terms of the devastation that it's going to cause.

This self isolation lark isn't as easy as it is made out to be...
I'm out of work, so easy for me, I only go out if I need to, shops etc.
Wife's a dental nurse and going to work. She is in a high risk job, obviously.
Son 1, is working and cannot work from home. His girlfriend works in a takeaway, so meeting public. He sees her everyday.
Son 2, works in a pub, so he is staying home with me (hopefully).
Daughter delivers takeaways, at arms length or drop on doorstep. So she is working with the public.

So it seems that myself and son 2 staying in is pretty worthless to be honest. There must be thousands in the same situation.

Once we get to June/July then onward wage budgets will need to be set for each team.

This is impossible if teams do not know if they will be relegated or not by then.

Someone as smart as Barber will know this. I'm sure he's raised this point with the PL, but for now they are in a holding pattern and it is 'wait and see'.

I'm expecting severe financial implications for PL clubs if the season doesn't finish ( or isn't voided ) by early July.

As for this debt to sky if they don't complete the season. This would have to be resolved by giving Sky extra free games, on top of those paid for, when football restarts.

Covid-19 is a very good reason that this season's games may need to be 'wasted'. And I fully accept that next season might not start on time bearing in mind the players will need 3/4 weeks of pre season training from the time they are able to get together again. When WWII finished in Europe in May 1945, it was another year before the football season started, ie August 1946. Now I'm not saying this is as bad as WWII but with any major event, surely it's better to get back as soon as you can to normal routine.

Also, the EPL need to establish a set of rules as to what to do in the future if the league has to be suspended for something similar. I think I saw somewhere that La Liga have in their rules how to determine the positions if the season can't be completed. If it's in the rules then no one can argue.

Voiding the 19/20 season creates more problems than it solves. For that reason, I don’t think it will happen.

Every little change in the odds for you helps. It is clearly better than not staying in.

No. Voiding solves more problems than spinning the season out indefinitely.

Onward PL team budgets are screwed if teams don't know what league they will be in by July.

You're sort of right but it's two less people outside if you do stay indoors.
