I know this is the calm before the inevitable storm or phoney war, but like you I’m hoping that all the sensible moves being made by individuals and the authorities hugely reduce the numbers who’ll pass away.

But both BBC Breakfast today and Sky News showed packed pubs last night, some full of blokes in their 60’s and 70’s. Beggars belief.

It’s the totally selfish ****wittery by those individuals not doing the right thing that’s the problem, evident in the numerous posts of packed pubs last night. Utter, utter ****tards.

Plus Italians are tactile, and the nation was unaware that the virus had hit the country for 4 weeks until first detected at the end of January. That was deemed clinically mild, then suspected pneumonia cases throughout the north were not tested for COVID-19. It took until mid February when the first Italian was diagnosed, for the lira to finally drop.

COVID-19 had a 6 week unfettered start in Italy.

So how do we know that's not what's happened in the UK?
At first we were only testing those who had been to infected countries or those who had been in contact with such people.
Surely Italy had the same testing criteria?

That’s not too bad on the face of it, assuming anyone immediately next to anyone else is from the same household. Would be more interested in queues at food and drink concessions etc........

The South Downs was almost as busy ! Quite noticeable that people were giving each other a wide berth though.

Insanely stupid. The only way to beat this is to cut your personal contacts down to virtually none for the next few weeks.. it is passed person to person so avoid close contact, wash hands regularly, this can be, and will be beaten by common sense precautions.

The other concern is the mortality rate in Italy. If the figures are correct and comparable, China had around 3,000 deaths from 80,000 cases - Italy is more like 4,000 from 50,000.
Italy have nearly 5,000 now, will have over 5,000 by the end of the day, and rising, while China's numbers have slowed considerably. Of course we don't know the true number of infections, so Italy may have had more than China.

Also worrying are concerns that Italy’s lockdown isn’t having much effect in terms of curbing new cases - hopefully that changes in the next few days and the numbers start to fall.
The lock-down takes a while to take effect, so it should do soon.

Shouldnt forget that the UK got twice the amount of ventilators compared to Italy meaning you should be able to cope a bit longer before reaching the point where you need to choose who lives and who dies, which to me seems like the point where it goes from really bad to horrible.

As for ICU capacity its really easy to increase as long as you have the staff and the equipment.

Italy lockdown started 12 days ago.

Given that the chart shows we are 14 days behind them, then any delay after Monday with our own lockdown is somewhat 'brave'.

Guess : overnight tonight London goes into lockdown, rolled out over the rest of the country over several days.

Premier League could resume before virus restrictions are lifted – Southampton chief

Martin Semmens
Martin Semmens is Southampton FC's chief executive

Southampton's chief executive has suggested Premier League matches could be on television every day while people are still confined to their homes because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Martin Semmens says the return of the top flight - currently suspended until at least 30 April - would be "a sign that the country is coming back to normal" but it should not happen before it is safe.

"We have to do what is right and safe for the general public," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"When everybody is safe and we're not using up NHS and police resources, the government would like us to get back to playing because we are entertainment and a sign that the country is coming back to normal.

"If people are home for another month and Premier League football is on the TV every day that can only be a good thing. Not because we are more essential than the NHS but because we can give people entertainment and show that we're fighting back."

Semmens said teams are hopeful of completing the league by the end of June but did not yet know when play would resume.

Some players will be out of contract on 30 June, but Semmens believes players could be convinced to stay for longer should play continue beyond that point

"We hope to get the league done by the end of June," Semmens added. "As soon as you go past that date, there are legal challenges.

"If we ended up playing until 15 July and you had to extend a player's contract by two weeks, convincing a player to play two more weeks of football and get paid nicely to do it - I don't believe that will be a substantial challenge.

"The challenge is making sure we don't have a knock-on effect to other seasons and make football compromised for years to come."

Has the Southampton Chairman been taking Stupid pills ?

Deluded.

It really hasn't sunk in with some in football yet. They won't kick another ball until September at the earliest.

Have you got any references for those two statements?

Edit: And we have far fewer doctors per 100,000 inhabitants than Italy. Which will make ICU management even harder.
