Seems Omicron has taken over in London...

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/lon...london-cases-covid-b971803.html#comments-area

London’s public health chief Professor Kevin Fenton told The Standard: “Our latest monitoring of provisional data indicates that over 50 per cent of cases sent for further analysis in London are now Omicron, replacing Delta as the dominant variant.

Meanwhile, all 11 countries on the UK's travel red list will be removed. Little point now....

The first minister asked people in Scotland “to limit socialising to three households at a time in the run-up to Christmas

The limit DOES NOT apply to people's main Christmas celebration”.

So, the same basis that the 4 governments were lambasted for last Christmas, by opponents later on.

I think Omicron is moving a lot faster than any system of government can move to slow it. It's pretty obvious that mixing in large groups such as at cinemas, theatres, gigs and sports events all are going to contribute to the spread. Throw in public transport there and back and I think its too late to stop the tsunami of cases.

This is v. important as there are currently more 'medically fit for discharge' patients in UK hospitals (about 10000) than with Covid (7400).

I don’t see the point of this guidance any more. There can’t be anyone left in this country who doesn’t know the risks of mixing.

Some will ignore it and do what they want anyway. Just let them, it will be themselves and their families (who also know the risks) who will be getting Covid.

The sensible ones will be more careful and not put the vulnerable at risk.

One of my fears with Omicron (if it is causing mainly milder illness) is when it is so prevalent and mostly (again, if it is causing mainly milder illness) mild and asymptomatic infections, is that when we start to see 25%, 33%, 50% of normal patients being admitted to hospital for other reasons, they don't differentiate between an actual Covid case (someone being admitted for Covid complications) or an incidental Covid case, where they are being admitted for trauma etc, and just happen to have very mild or no symptoms.

People then see this sudden rise, panic buttons are hit, fear in the already mentally scared pubic kicks in and lockdowns are called for.

101 Tory MPs rebelled, lots of proper fweedoms will be lost soon. But that's for another thread...

Mark Harper was just on and said that Johnson needs to start answering questions on evidence when asked for it.

I’m not sure you can argue with that.

In the UK, Dr Paul Burton, chief medical officer at Moderna, has been speaking to MPs on the Commons science and technology committee.

Burton said he expects data in the coming days to show how well the Moderna booster improves protection against the Omicron variant.

He cautioned against claims, largely from South Africa, that the variant is causing milder disease, and warned that Omicron and Delta are likely to circulate together for some time.

“I do not think Omicron is a milder, less severe version of the current virus,” he told the committee.

He added:

The idea it will push Delta out of the way and take over may occur in the future, but I think in the coming months these two viruses are going to co-exist, and Omicron, which I would maintain is actually a severe disease, will now infect people on a background of very, very strong Delta pressure.

It will also lead to a situation where individuals will become co-infected … which gives the opportunity for this virus to further evolve and mutate which is a concerning and worrying situation.

We certainly don’t have to panic, we have many many tools at our disposal, we’ve learnt so much about this virus over the last two years, and we can continue to fight it, but I think Omicron poses a real threat.

When you look at the data in SA about 15% of people who are hospitalised are in the intensive care unit, and while there’s variability, if you look back earlier in the year, at a time of delta surge in August, those numbers are about the same, 15%.

So while the mortality rate we are seeing right now is mercifully lower, I think as a disease it is a very fit virus and it’s severe.

Oh yeah he'd like that... The covid vaccine is the only product they have. A situation where people dont need new jabs and boosters every 6th months or so would be a disaster for them.

The 6 o'clock news is incredible, everyone is losing their sh1t!

Funnily enough that's what happens when ministers, MPs, scientists, TV and newspapers turn the fear up to 11 every second of the day :lolol::lolol:

Remember 2 years ago when it was " Just " another 'flu bug and it was nothing to worry about ? That went well didn't it ?

I'm pretty sure quite a lot has happened since then.

The point is that people are not " Losing their shit " and turning the fear up to 11, this is serious and we don't know how its going to play out yet , its no laughing matter.
