People start doing the basics of wearing masks in all public settings, social distancing, keeping to their own household bubbles if possible and regularly test themselves. All these will help keep cases down and relieve stress on the NHS and if we all play our part I am confident we can stop the government having to reverse back and make restrictions to some areas of society in Autumn and Winter.

So restrictions now to avoid the government having to reverse and impose restrictions in autumn and winter?

That is true, Scotland’s case rate is running at 2 to 3 times that of England and Wales.

But not reflecting in deaths.

Sturgeon made plain her answer to getting the case rate down:

About a third of Scotland’s new cases were in the under-19s age group.

The First Minister said that she hopes the JCVI will recommend the vaccination for all 12- to 15-year-olds soon.

Sturgeon said on Friday: “If I was making a plea to the JCVI, and it’s not for me to tell them what decision to reach and they’ve got to do that on the basis of the evidence, but please make it quickly.”

Isn’t this what happened in England and saw people predict 120-150k cases a day before falling

Sensible behaviour more than restrictions, people wearing face masks when in crowded settings indoors and outdoors and trying to social distance where possible plus everyone taking regular tests. These are far less intrusive measures than what might come down the line if we fail to get on top of cases in the next month.

I agree that if people take low impact precautions now such as regular testing and wearing face coverings in public places it might very well reduce the chances of problems down the road.

Zero Covid, 'back to normal' Melbourne, Australia has equalled London's 207 days in lockdown.

It now seems almost inevitable that it will spend four more weeks shut down and overtake Buenos Aires as the world's most locked down city.

The difference is AU lockdowns have protected public health, ours have not

Its not just deaths levels. The NHS is now seeing significant scaring from Covid from last winters disaster, not to mention the effects of long Covid.

My father needs a routine operation, wait 18-24 months in pain for the NHS or go private and get it done in 2 weeks. He's got money, he's going private. This is the place poor governance is taking us to...

Won't wear a mask, will take disproven horse worming drugs.

To be fair, Ivermectin is a useful drug in treating some parasite infections in humans. It has also shown some efficacy in in vitro against Covid, the problem being only at doses that not only would hugely harmful to patients, but also so large as to be impossible to obtain. There is no way of delivering the drug in a dose high enough, and even if you could, you would probably kill the patient.

I have to assume those who advocate Ivermectin are just ignorant and not actually psychopathic, although I have doubts about some.

Of course Fox News has actually been promoting the drug

Hard to believe their owner rocked up in an NHS clinic in Henley last January, one of the first to get the AZ vax.

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/neil-ferguson-sage-government-imperial-college-london-scientific-advisory-group-for-emergencies-b953420.html

Prof Neil Ferguson warning of a massive increase in cases and the potential for restrictions to be reintroduced.
Two quotes in particular show varying degrees of ridiculousness.

One from Ferguson: "He said if an unvaccinated population of 5 or 10% all got Covid in a short period of time it would result in a “large healthcare burden, and a large number of deaths” and that it could also “have a risk of significantly overwhelming health systems even in high income countries such as the UK”."

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious. If everyone broke their leg at the same time it would have a significant burden on the NHS. If everyone developed cancer at the same time it would have a significant burden on the NHS. If everyone caught flu at the same time ...

But we don't, do we. The chances of this disease suddenly hitting everyone in the country in "a short period of time", are nil.

And one from Tim Specter: "Fully vaccinated people are getting Covid, but not only are they often unable to spot the signs of infection due to the Government’s outdated list of symptoms, we’ve seen evidence that the protection provided by vaccines is wearing off.” So people are getting ill, but so mildly that they don't know they're ill, and this is evidence the vaccine isn't working?

Saw this the other day, wonder what some peoples thoughts would be on it?

Basically, whether your vaccinated or not, you will probably be infected by Covid. At least the vaccine is still holding up strong against severe illness, hospitalisation & death.

means we just stop worrying about it, vaccine minimises illness of infected, so move on to accept it as part of normality like flu, pneumonia, etc. definatly need to stop routine testing which is costing us a fortune, directly and in the consequences.

i dont like when medical professionals start talking up hypothetical variants. noticed we havent had another variant since Delta? some want to talk their book and want us to fear another variant round the corner. lets wait until one is identified and seen spreading.

Great News. Means there won’t be as he gets everything wrong.

Cases will surge, I'd be amazed if he gets that wrong. Offices back, unvax'd kids back, all restrictions off and heating will soon be on

I would do the following:

a) Face mask mandatory for shops and public transport

b) Mass testing in schools twice a week, anyone that refuses a test will be sent home unless they have a special case

c) Offer vaccinations to all teens ASAP, you can still go to school unvax'd but you must be tested

d) Defer mass office return and still work from home if you can. Review in 2 months

e) NHS pass required for all hospitality and leisure by October 1

Do these and we have a fighting chance to getting through the winter without restrictions. Cases today 38k worse in Europe, will have worse deaths too unless we act

Yet scientists (correctly IMO) pushing for a move away from focusing on all cases and them being announced daily and just focusing on how many of those cases are people who get sick. How many of the 38,000 announced today (Cases by specimen date been pretty flattish for a couple of weeks nearly. Much more accurate way to look at trends) are actually or will end up getting sick? That is where the focus needs to shift to.
