Do you happen to have access to the total number of reported flu cases for the UK last year as well?

This is a quote from the article;

Although flu might not seem like a deadly illness, on average it kills around 17,000 people in England a year.

Public Health England told ITV News: "The number of flu cases and deaths due to flu-related complications varies each flu season.

"The average number of deaths in England for the last five seasons, 2014/15 to 2018/19, was 17,000 deaths annually.

"This ranged from 1,692 deaths last season, 2018/19, to 28,330 deaths in 2014/15."

Since October, more than 4,000 people with confirmed flu have been admitted to hospitals in England with at least 70 deaths.

To get things in perspective, if 80,000 in China have tested positive, and 3000 have died, out of a population of 1,600,000,000 that represents 0.005% of the population. Compare this to the population of the UK of 65,000,000 and we could have 3,250 positive cases and 122 deaths. However the figures are unlikely to be this high as the original outbreak in China was uncontrolled for a month and our health services and hygiene are far better.

This is somewhat reassuring.

But then you have to consider the extreme measures taken in China. Not sure how much stomach we would have for that over here.

I think you, also, have to factor in that Hubei Province is approximately a quarter the size of the UK, but with a similar size population - 59 million. The likelihood of rapid transmission with that density of population is far greater.

Time for decisive action.

I'm all for cancelling the Premier League for this season. It's the only appropriate course of action.

Not sure if that's tongue in cheek? Though France has cancelled all gatherings of more than 5000 and Switzerland more than 1000, so I guess their domestic seasons will be affected. The Italians are playing behind closed doors, maybe thats what we'll get to?

Euros in the summer might be off?

Which confirms that both the Government and Press/TV have been talking up the panic with their reactions and coverage.

I'm now waiting for the unnecessary restrictions to be introduced so that PL attendances are restricted to 5,000.
So a minimum 500 loyalty points to get a ticket.

I volunteer with a charity that takes disabled kids to Lourdes (France) every year at Easter, around 6000 people travel in total. Just been cancelled, first time since the charity was founded in the 1950's.

Here, there and everywhere
I wonder whether it has anything to do with tomato growing or tomato consumption.

Top 7 tomato-growing countries in the world:
1. China (33% of global production)
2. India
3. Turkey
4. USA
5. Egypt
6. Iran
7. Italy

Or even GM tomatoes that are bred to have medicinal effects, maybe not quite working to plan.

"Tomatoes (along with potatoes, bananas and other plants) are being investigated as vehicles for delivering edible vaccines. Clinical trials have been conducted on mice using tomatoes expressing antibodies or proteins that stimulate antibody production targeted to norovirus, hepatitis B, rabies, HIV, anthrax and respiratory syncytial virus.Korean scientists are looking at using the tomato to express a vaccine against Alzheimer's disease. Hilary Koprowski, who was involved in the development of the polio vaccine, led a group of researchers in developing a tomato expressing a recombinant vaccine to SARS."

It's down to Pangolins and other strange medicinal concoctions.

I've stocked up on water, toilet paper and dried food. I've advised all my loved ones to do the same. This is going to get bad.

I'm guessing with the huge economic hit this has caused China, they'll ban the sale of all that weird wildlife stuff they eat.

If trade movement is stopped they might have to eat what they can find.
